Sorry everyone for the delay. I had parts of it done at home and some at work and I was busy with other stuff so it took a while to get it all together.

Anyway, it's my main page now http://www.geocities.com/craigbrace
direct link to HUD http://www.geocities.com/cbmaxima/maxima/hud/hud.html
it'll probably be down for bandwidth pretty soon but if so, try again in an hour or so

Craig i have all the parts with me right now. i was lookin' at ur how-to site and the first image of the main control unit of the HUD if u look to the right there a piece of the green circuit board sticking out. in ur image it seems u took off the wires that wires up to another piece of circuit board with the small bulbs. well as i was takin' the whole unit off from behind the digital dash i sort of bent up a little and cracked the piece of circuit board sticking out in ur image. my question is do i need that piece at all since it seems that it was just meant for the bulbs section???

the exposed side of the circuit board does seem to be for the idiot lights, but I cant guarantee that they didn't run traces for other circuits through that part of the board. I have done some PCB designs recently for work and the auto-router will do some really weird stuff with the traces so just because the connectors aren't on that side doesn't necessarily mean that there aren't other signals running through that part of the board.

But I'd say tape up that side so nothing will be exposed and try wiring it up (before taking out the whole dash to cut it) and see if you can get it to turn on. I think it might work.

also, thanks again for the VTCs and all that stuff, I got them installed over xmas and it worked out great. It was a little bit more of a pain not cutting the timing chain, but oh well.

I'll give it a shot but i kept lookin' at the circuit board thats exposed and it seems to me that there r no circuits connected to the other side of the board but i'll will try and c what happens. till then u the man Craig.

Here is the HUD unit from a '93 240SX, i found in the junkyard. i didn't see the control unit, but i didn't have time to look, i just hoped my same-gen GXE had something equivalent. this project is a long way off, but i thought these might help for reference:

i got one 3 days ago for my buddy that also has the same year 240SX so he will be doin' the HUD conversion as well. we took all the parts necessary. reason u didn't c the control unit is because its built into the gauge cluster its not like the maxima cluster which is just screwed up behind the cluster. so go back and c if u c the cluster and take it cuz thats what u need and the rest of the harnesses that comes with it. i also took out a spare HUD out of another maxima in the junyard but i still need the control unit to have complete second HUD system.

nice but if u were to do this conversion where r u gonna put the digi gauge??? now like Craig said earlier the wirings r most likely different so u have to compare both wiring diagrams for the maxima and 240SX.

i dont know, first thing first. my car isnt even running now. i would probably, if i had to use the cluster gauge in the wiring, just hide it in/under the dash somewhere. its going to be a lot of tinkering and model comparison before this starts working, if it can at all, and i really dont have the time right now. i will post up this thread when i do

hey Craig i got a few questions for u buddy:

1. In the middle harness of the analog gauges i have 2 black wires. Which one can i tap into? #1 is the very last one next to a light blue wire. #2 is 3rd from last next to red/yellow wire. which one do i have to tap into the middle harness of the analog gauges for the ground???

2. In the middle harness of hte analog gauges i also have 2 Green/Orange wires. Which one do i have to tap into? #1 is 3rd from last next to a light blue wire. #2 the last one on the corner next to an empty wire slot. which one do i have to tap into the middle harness of the analog gauges for the speed sensor???

3. Which wire did u tap into on the power/comfort switch to make HUD turn on???

4. Where did u put the black wire for the HUD? (The wire that comes out of the small brown harness from the side of the Control Unit.)

5. The brown/white wire (which is a 12V constant wire) which wire did u tap that into???

I hope u can help me out on all of this cuz im not sure that ur harnesses from ur SE might be the same for my GXE???

thanks,
Rick

1. both solid black wires are ground so it doesn't matter
2. FSM shows no mention of two green/orange wires in that harness and I dont recall that. Are you sure? Anyway, you want the one next to the light blue wire
3. I have a 5spd so my power/comfort switch was added and didn't have any existing wiring. I forget which terminals I used, but you can measure continuity and see which ones are connected when the switch is on. Since you've converted to 5spd, I'd just cut the harness (cover all the loose wires of course) and then test the terminals.
4. I dont think I did anything with the black wire. You could extend it and bring it down to the power/comfort switch if that's what you want to use. It's just a ground wire though and I already had ground going to my switch so I didn't need it.
5. I honestly dont remember where I tapped into constant power. Probably the door lock timer since it's just beneath that area. I think it's a white/red wire there, but test it to be sure. There are tons of other wires you could use in different spots, just get something that has voltage at all times.

hey Craig i did the wiring to have it ready and tried it out and seems that the HUD projector blinked a few times and then it just went out and when i looked closely there r some areas that want to light up but they don't. i hope i didn't fry the control unit cuz then i'll be searching for a new one for a long time.

hmmm, I doubt you fried the control unit unless you REALLY screwed up but from your previous posts, it sounds like everything was at least close
I wonder if your unit was working before the car was junked. If you know how to solder, I'd definitely resolder all the parts in the main unit.

usmanasif - good to see you back, let me know if you have any problems with the install

i hope i didn't fry the damn thing cuz all i did is just made the connections and left the wires there to make sure the HUD works before i make a big a$$ hole on my dash. i'll double check and i'll take some pics to show u how im doin' it and maybe u can help me out if u c something wrong.

i have had my HUD installed since mid nov. and I dont even think about it know 3 speedoes and i still speed the other two is on the digidash digital readout and bar. no regrets installing it nice looking at the dash and its just black when its off. brian did u find anything to use on windshield to reflect. and when u have dash lights on hud dims correct? did u notice if u press the dimmer to max it will get full brightness. so how many people got the swap[ done now. atleast i can claim second. and 1st of dash to my knowledge. well goodluck all who is swapping. somebody asked me about a write up on the dash swap its bolt in but as of wiring follow a schematic cuz thats what I did and it'll take to long to get the book out and make a list for guys. eh I talk to much

i'm right in the middle of this massive but tiny project. for the GXE'rs that questions asked previously about 2 green/orange speed sensor wires is true, must be model specific to the GXE.

i have a few questions/concerns:

i did some of the wiring, after i took the dash out... mounted the HUD, fit very nicely... spliced into the analog harness, but did not tap power
- i turned the key to ACC or ON to test for power to tap into and the wipers went nuts, not only could i not turn them off, they were going faster than ever! nothing else was wrong, just that...?
i still cant turn them off and have no idea how it happened.

i have two quick questions for Craig B (thanks for the write up btw, wouldnt have even tried this without it) or anyone who has done the HUD.

- the brown side harness' wires are strictly for turning on and off the HUD, correct? is there a way i can test it out before installing them to a switch? I spliced the MPH and ON together and extended them as well as the ground but theyre just free-floating now.

- what is a good wire to tap into for power? I have never really done much electrical work, a lil soldering and some wiring, but this is a bigger step for me. i dont feel comfortable splicing the brown constant and the blue/white yet, not sure where to put them.

thanks
tom

i'm nearly finished. fixed the crazy wiper problem, without knowing what i did, just redid the wiring with better insulation.
now i just need to tap some power wires...

is this red/white wire behind the ignition relay safe to tap? i figure it only on when the key in at ON, but i have no test light - i need to figure out where to put the brown constant 12V and the blue/white paired with green.
tom
...till then, i drive like this!

ok i tapped the brown wire into the red/white door lock timer wire. now, i hope, all that is left is where i put the blue/white & green wires for the ACC/ON current, i know it seems like an obvious answer, but i know very little about electrical stuff - one reason i'm doing this (to learn).
could someone please enlighten me and tell me one wire in the dash vicinity that receives power when the key is at ACC/ON ?

once i hook that one up, i just have the loose ends of the brown side harness... can i just touch them to a ground to see if the HUD turns on?

many thanks to anyone that has read this and knows what i'm talking about,

tom

tap into one of the wires by the ignition switch for your ACC on power
and you can just touch the ground wire to a ground in my experience
