recent high fuel consumption

hey all. very new to this. have a 92 maxima. about 6 months ago the speedo/odo/cc just stopped working. ok, no problem. ive been driving it just to work and back and have no intention of selling it. 2 weeks ago i noticed i was putting in a lot of gas. on a recent trip of about 60-70 miles, i used 6+ gallons!! i know so because i filled it up the night before and the morning after. i spent $25 at night and $13 in the morning. so, the lack of odometer is not relevant. no signs of leaks anywhere either under the hood or under the car. no spots in the driveway either. even had it in the shop for brakes and the guys had it on the scanner and found nothing. this just happened all of a sudden. the car runs like a dream, of course! no flooding, stalling or hesitation.
ive used stp fuel injecter cleaner in the last tankfull. no difference. doesnt burn any oil.
would like to tackle the problem myself as the guys (very reliable) who did the brakes cant figure it out either. i have more than a bit of mechanical skill but this is very weird, no?
any help will be greatly appreciated.
thanx

I think a lot of guys have seen much improved gas mileage by putting in a new o2 sensor, but if yours is that bad, it likely would have thrown a code. That is just a possibility.

Maybe someone siphoned off some gas at night or something...

hey guys. sorry to hear your milage. i have always gotten 28-30 in this car. i can get almost 400 miles per tank, so this is a big problem for me!
red92max, i talked to some parts people and looked up some info onthe web and most agree an o2 sensor problem would be a gradual thing. and, the car still runs great!!
