Not alot of people have done this mod in a 3rd gen, come to think of it, I think I'm the only one I love it, best $20 I could have spent.

I think most of the aftermarket bulbs aren't going to be a heck of a lot better than Silverstars. I have XD5s and they are probably about the same, but just a shade whiter.

You can either do an E36 conversion or put in stronger driving lights to help.

i don't think there are other bulbs out there that will perform any better than the silverstars given the same wattage. i did a comparison awhile back between the XD5 and the silverstars (both 45/65 watts). the silverstars puts out more usable light onto the road. the xd5's just looks whiter, but lumens output isn't as high as the silverstars.

9007=55wattLB/65wattHB

9004=45wattLB/65wattHB

Thats how its brighter, you can use silverstar's with 9007 bulbs. Not only that, the beam is wider and taller so it lights up the road closer and throws light further. Just check out my beam and compare it to your 9004 off a wall, its alot bigger and whiter. Compared to silverstar 9004 bulbs, a plain jane standard 9007 bulb gives off more lumens (which is what brightness is), even though its lower on the kelvin scale (color temperature).

I am not the smartest guy when it comes to wiring and crap. Do you have a write up or pics of what you did to convert from 9004 to 9007? Did you buy a new harness for it?

This is something I might look into and it might be an option for those of us who don't really want to mess with all of the wiring/cutting involved in an E36 conversion.

Link to 9004 to 9007 with pics http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=312531 Your going to have to seriously lower your headlights with this mod so it doesn't glare.

Link to Highbeam -> lowbeam conversion http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=341289

No new harness is required, just alittle slicing of the stock wires and rewiring.

Since the server won't allow me to EDIT my post, I'd suggest to shave off all the nubs in the headlamp, this way you can position the bulb to ANY position you so chose to get optimal lighting with the 9007 bulb. I would recommend a position where the HB filament is lower than the LB filament, that in turn would allow you to utilize the HB->LB conversion.
