Can You Help (taillights)

I took my car to a local shop ti have my temperture guage checked and they said it was fine. Anyway I got home and I was washing my car and I noticed about 1/2 inch (maybe) gap between my taillight and bumper (I looked and it has 88 on the light). So I went back up there and told them that they switched taillights on me. They said "You don't know what your talking bout that those taillights fit that car.We accidently cracked one so we replaced it." I told them that the replaced it with the wrong year and they had to put in taillights from an 89-93 that 88 is to small. There response is "we dont have to do anything, and you can't prove that they wasn't like that before you brought it to the shop" Legally there isn't much I can do.(I actually got riped off what last extra money I hadfor that and the $money its gonna cost me to replace the small 88's){and just for the info might be a little while.

Mines an 1989 Maxima SE

But the question is I seen on here that some people say to go with the '92. SO when I save some money should I find the 92 instead of 89? whats the difference in the way they look?

89-91 the turn signal wraps all the way around.
(GXE tail lights)
92-94 the turn signal is only on the back part.
(also GXE)

BTW 88 is totally different:

check my page for comparison of 3rd gens (se vs gxe and 89-91 vs 92-94)

like internetautoguy just posted, if they put a taillight in from an 88 maxima, it would be VERY obvious and not fit at all.

Take off the taillight and remount it to see if that works. It should fit properly and use your eyes to mount it evenly gapped.

no that will not help. There is no way to get the tail lights uneven on our cars unless he drilled out the holes that bolt it down. The holes are exact and a very tight fit.

My guess is that the molding if broken off of the light and that is why you think its a gap. We really just need some pics to see.

Not neccesarily. I have an 89 gxe as well and i changed my left tail light to the 92-94 Design and it also has a gap. The reason being is the white part on the inside of the car that snaps into the light and holds the lamps doesnt fit correctly, from the 89 design. So you either have to get the light harness (dont know if thats what its called). Or just the 89 light with a simple trade at the junk yard. If i were you i would just go with the trade. Reason being is that, With one light having the 89 design and the other the 92 design. It looks really weird, trust me i have it in now.. Also the white part at the bottom is slightly thicker than on the 92 design than the 89. I went with the 92 because i also had to replace the center on the trunk and thought i got the 92 but instead it was same model. So im just sticking with the dag gone 89 design. Hope this helps. Also i have a spare white piece for the right lamp not sure Which one it is though. Ill take pics of my tail light on the car tonight and also the white piece i have. If your interested holla back.Good luck!

If it stops raining today I'll try to take and post some pictures, If not I'll try to get them posted tomorrow to show u the gap. It kinda looks like the taillights are a little too short.

Take a picture of your entire taillights, I have a hard time understanding without a picture.

So you're saying that only one side of your tailight has a 1/2" gap but the other one doesn't?

Well eith mine its diffrent. mine is below but its also at side. The side where the gas filler is. In your picture there is a space like the botom at the side.
