Rack and pinion replacement.

Has anyone ever changed out their rack and pinion?
I noticed my stearing go to crap and noticed while moving the wheel, the rack would slide 1/2 to a full inch side to side.

I have a spare VE pinion and pump, will it fit my VG?
How much time will this take?
And can it be slid out throught the wheel wells?

This PROBUBLY isn't safe, any help will be awesome.

have you checked the bushings that hold the rack in place?

I changed my rack about a month ago. There are five bolts holding it in place, and one is a real b!tch to get at. It came out the drivers side wheel well with no problems. I would check those bushings and the torque on those five bolts before changing your rack. This whole job will take you a couple of hours (without any problems, of course).

Here is some info from a 300Z website.

What LQ91SE said.. the bushings are prone to going out, and it will allow the rack to slide side to side about 3/4". seen it several times myself.

pull the Y pipe off and the bolts on the rack are much easier to get to. you can then change the bushings on the rack and bolt it back to the firewall. should solve your problem, but you'll need an alignment afterwards.

Very helpful and encouraging.

Yup the bushings are wasted, but the boots are disingrated as well. . .

I'm told that when the boots go, the rack should be changed.
