Clutch Pedal Sinks to the floor?

Clutch Pedal Sinks to the floor?
This has happened to me a few times already. I park my car at night and come back the next morning and the clutch pedal is on the floor. I have to hook my foot on the bottom to lift it back up. It also happened a couple of times on the highway after staying in gear for a long time.
I checked the MC and SC and I dont see any leaks. The only thing I did find that prob is bad, is the cap for the MC. One of the tabs that hold it down is cracked so it is held in by the other tap only. Would this be causing it? Is the MC cap supposed to hold in pressure or s/t?

The clutch usually engages pretty consistantly and easily.
The other thing it does is when I release the pedal it has about an inch of play in it and it doesnt pop up. It stays to the bottom of the inch of free play.
How can I test to see if the MC is bad?

you'd have to get a pressure gauge to test the amount of pressure the master cylinder puts out. i'd imagine it would need to be somewhere between 30-40 psi.
just in case,
check the firewall where your master cylinder mounts up to see if it's leaking inside from its seal and check the clutch hard line dist. block as well for leaks. but jeff's right, you're likely running with a bad mc.

I hate to bring up old issues but this thing is plagueing me. I tore out my MC. Nothing looked damaged. I got some of black mollasses lookin stuff out and serviced it following the chilton directions. Bled the clutch for the 5th time but still after about 5-10 min of driving in one gear I have to pump the clutch to shift in or out of gear. it seems to be getting worse fast. PLEASE HELP!!

Try your slave cylinder. That's the thing that went out on my first max. I kept having to pump the clutch. Then, after a while it got more play in it until finally it was grabbing right on the floor. I took it to a clutch repair place because this was in the winter. I think parts and everything were like $100 or $150. I am sure it is considerably cheaper if you do it yourself.

I just had the same problem. clutch pedal would work then shoomp, down to the floor. Feel like an idiot stopping at a light and reaching down to grab the clutch pedal.
Anyway, I thought it was the mc but it was the slave. I saw a leak down from the sc to the starter. I just replaced both the mc and sc since both have close to 130k on them. No problems now.

The 944's have a similar setup and we noticed that there was a rash of master/slave failures when the weather turned cold. Evidently the temperature change wreaks havoc with the seals when they are worn.
I've always replaced both the master and slave together. They both get the exact same amount of use so if one is bad, the other isn't far behind.
As cheap as the parts are for these cars (compared to Porsche) it doesn't make sense not to change them both.

I am 98% sure that it is the slave cylinder. The same exact thing happened to me about a week ago. The thing is I went through $15 worth of synthetic brake fluid to find out it was the slave cylinder causing the problem. Didn't realize it was leaking out till I stepped on it, Looked underneath and it was a lake .
