What front axles do I need???

From what I gather, my front axle half-shafts are leaking heavy grease, and need to be replaced.

I went to autozone looking for the part, and they asked me if I have ABS brakes or not.

Car is a 93 GXE. Do these come with ABS? My first thought is that it does/would/should, but I have locked up my brakes on quite a few occasions, with no ABS pulsing at all.

Anybody know if the front axle's are really that much different between ABS and non-ABS Maxima's?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

You have to get the correct ones. They will ask ABS, tranny, how many cams, and whether it has a highspeed diff. You can figure out if it has ABS by 1 looking under the hood 2 turn your key to the on position and look for the yellow ABS light on the cluster. If you can't find them at Autozone, try Oreilly Auto, NAPA, ICP, or an axle shops. Mine were special order ten days out, so I got a local axle shop to rebuild them for 75 an axle installed... with a lifetime warranty. They are perfect now

That's what I would have thought, but if ABS was on all 3rd gen maxima's, why would autozone even ask me?

Thanks nelle, I will check for ABS.

autozones computers are odd, i got both of my front axles from there and they asked me the same question so i asked them to compare the part numbers to see if the axles were different and they werent, same axle.

Wrong.....! If your GXE has rear discs, then it has ABS. Best way to check would be to pop the hood and check your engine bay:

See the unit on the left side with all the metal lines going in and out of it? That's the ABS unit. Its next to the windshield washer fluid fill neck. If you don't have ABS, your coolant overflow reservoir would be located on the left side in place of it, instead of next to the battery. Hope that helps.

Because AZ is staffed by complete morons!
NEVER ASSUME ANYTHING when it comes to getting parts for your car.

Best thing i have found to do is take the axles off first[or any part], take it down there and match them up visually.

I do have drum brakes in rear, and I do have a coolant overflow tank there, so I probably don't have ABS. (which also explains the tire lock-ups, haha)

Thanks again for the help! Mizeree_X gets a cookie!

most chain stores are staffed by people getting low pay and lacking real useful knowledge.
stick to the mom and pop store and you're more likely to end up with the right part.

I need to replace outer CV joints too. But the question I'm asking myself - would it be easier to replace "complete" axle instead of just a CV joint? How long does it take (do it yourself, of course) for just outer CV joint and for "compete" axle?

Yeap, in any case I'll have to remove both axles ... "right side" first and then "left side" (outer CV on left side is bad) ...

How much would you charge for both axles (it's for GXE with ABS)?
No shipping is required - I can pick 'em up in Chicago.

And ... in this case I'll need somebody in Chicago area to install 'em (I'm not paying "customs" again). Any good shop around?

Sounds more then fair. Thanks! I should be in Chicago around Christmas (including a week after 25th).

BTW, we are talking complete axles (not outer CV joints) with boots, rights?
