A lot of people apparently have the working speedometer (so the speed sensor must be good) but the odometer/trip meter doesn't work. The usual fix is to replace the gauge cluster. Does anybody know exactly what it is that fails to cause the odometer problem?

 

Little plastic gears inside the odometer. They usually get slightly worn every time it is reset while the vehicle is MOVING.
