had the sam prob with my speedo but my tach was fine. i changed the speed sensor but have occasional problems. seems to occur most in high humid cond. and hotter days. i use my tach to guess my speed range on the highway. no tickets yet. hope I don't jinx myself
I have the same problem too. Replacing the VSS did not fix my problem, but I know my VSS was dying anyway(as per error code). I assume it has bad solder connections just like the Lock timer box etc. I have a GPS and a window mount, which displays my speed as well as the maps. Probably cheaper than replacing the cluster

Wow! Seems like this is a common problem. Had similar thing happen with my '89. Speedo and odo both quit a the same time. I changed the inst. panel with used one. still didn't work. Found out (with help from this forum) that I was looking at the wrong thing as the speedometer pinion. When I did finally locate it(firewall side of tranny and kind of under the oil filter, I noticed that the top of the unit looked like it was sticking out. I tapped it back in and my speedo and odo have worked ever since. I guess I pulled on the leads at sometime(when changing oil maybe) and lifted the top of the Snesor out. At least now I know where the darn thing is if it does quit for good.
check the speedo pinion connected to the VSS. the plastic teeth may be gone. if not, then check the continuity at the harness. if none, then you might need to rewire directly to the ECU or cluster. i rewired it directly to my cluster, routing the new wires from the VSS through the wheel well gromet to the back of the cluster. this fixed my odo/speedometer. however, the speedometer will drop to zero if i drive for a really long time (ie, road trips).
