How Short Can I Make the Stick?

How Short Can I Make the Stick?
Okay, I still got the Stillen STS in a box while I decide how short to cut it. I can't believe they sell it as long as the stock one, but I wanted the Stillen smoothness. Now I want to make it short, like sports car short (4DSC, duh!). Reach won't be a problem. But I don't want to be stupid about it and make it so short that it creates difficulties or becomes a problem. How short can I make it?
To compound the cutting decision: I don't really know if the Stillen IS the same height as the stock one, like others have said. I have the Stillen in hand, and from the pictures that Tonyklem provided during his cut of 1.75 inches, his stock shifter (the "Before" picture) looks 1.25 inches longer than the Stillen. (That's me comparing a two-dimensional STS to a three-dimensional one, yeah right!) If that's true, I will need to subtract 1.25" from the desired length to shortened. Does anyone know if the Stillen STS results in a slightly shortened stick or is it the exact same height as stock?
And what about that first Q, how short can you go?

the short throw isnt the length of the stick but where the fulcrum is positoned on it,so even wiht the stock stick height you shift could only be a 2" movement compared to stock at 4" movement... so cutting it will make it shorter again,it wil also reduce leverage.
So iguess in end it owudl be up to your personnaly preference, but posislby try it how it is first and you might lie the feel.... maybe not the look but the feel is what is important

I know about the short throw thing, but I am looking to get BOTH a short throw and a shortened stick. By grabbing the stick below the shifter **** and shifting with it, I know I could handle a shortened stock shifter, so I already plan on cutting the Stillen one before installing it. And I just want to install it once, because I'm paying for the installation. Though your comment about leverage was right on. Just how short can it be before the leverage comes into play? Or is the Stillen "smooth" enough that I could cut it to any length and not be fighting the leverage?

I cut the stock stick down 2" as well. I could probably do with it another 1" lower tho.
The only I would worry about is the leverage. The lower you make the top (above the pivot point) the less leverage you will have, and the more notchy the shift feel may become.

I hacked off 2"s off the stock stick. I think it had too much leverage and made it look like a truck. I usauly grinded 2nd, but being 2 inches short reduces grinding for me to none. Probubly will take off another inch though.

The stock shifter doesnt seem that high to me. I actually went from an STS to a stock shifter on purpose.
Then again, my shift **** doesnt screw onto the top threading, it's hollow so the top couple inches of the shifter slide up inside it. So my shifter doesnt seem all that high

nice, your work deserves a lot more recognition. welding is hard... good job.
-since people can't stand the sight of the shifter sticking out so much, u think someone would try to raise the center console up an few inches? maybe ill try it out. but it sounds like it would be a ton of work.

Thx. I know what you mean - I've considered buliding an entirely new full-length console b4, but it seems like something else always comes up that I need to/want to do. Maybe some day I'll actually do it? Not sure if I'll do it out of fiberglass (easier) or steel (much more difficult, but more rewarding if it works).

.. i dont think ur going to miss anything that it would cover up, some ppl shave that entire part anyways...
- the hard parts would be make it look flush, the seatbelt holes/screw holes..
edit: oh u mean the point where the center ends and the dash starts... didnt think about that... theres like a good 2 inches of empty space... I better start learning how to use fiberglass

Yes, that's what I meant. As yes....., you better...
You'll probably want to keep it as 2 pieces too (like stock - 1 between the seats and 2 around the radio) - otherwise removing the new console could be a pita.
