ok guys, 93 DOHC, 3.0 litre, what's the deal with the VTC's..do they go bad, so that it will **** up the timing? and if so, how easy are they to rebuild..? and how much?? where to get them, etc..
OK we could help you a lot more if you back up and tell us what you did from the beginning or what symptoms started your process of going into the motor and chains. You have asked a couple of times for the fsm diags and some other questions but you really haven’t given us much info on what exactly you are wanting or have done.
If you let us know what you did and start from the beginning maybe we can help a little more.
The VTCs go bad and start to tick. They do not mess up timing when they do that. You can ground them to make the ticking go away. Some have gone a long time with their VTCs grounded. You can get the rebuild kit (around $100) form a dealer or buy new ones also from the dealer (around $400 each I believe). You can rebuild them yourself by following the TSB. That link should be in the stickies.

ok here's the deal, i ran the car..it was runnin good, then, i shut it off, went inside, and about..2 hours later..went out and tried to start it..it would only run if you held ur foot on the gas, and kept it above 2grand, ok, so a mechanic friend of mine told me it was the tensioners that were shot, and the chain skipped a tooth, so i took it apart, and tried it out..it didnt work, now i just got everything set again..and im gonna put it back together, but i got thinking..and the VTC's are the only things i dont know about..as far as what they do, and how they work etc, i am new to these japanese cars, i'm used to chevy smallblocks and john deere diesels, mostly american stuff so..there's where we're at..i just need to know what's up with the VTC's and when i did put it back tgether..it did tick but it wouldnt stay running, one cam was out, i found that out, but now they're all set, should i do anytihng to the VTC's before i try to start it again?

gotcha...I would go ahead and rebuild them while everything is apart...especially if it was ticking before. The rebuild is not too difficult and shouldnt take long. The only problems is how long you might have to wait on parts.
