problems with head gasket?

my max has 213k miles on it. I had the coolant flushed yesterday and the guy that did it for me told me that I need a new oil pan gasket and he told me that I prob need to get a new head gasket.

has anyone had any problems with their head gaskets going out on them how can I tell if its going out?

Thanks for your help.
Nathan

Mine supposedly has a weeping head gasket, but it shows no signs of an issue.

In your case, if there is milky stuff in the oil, or a lot of white smoke out the back, you've probably got headgasket issues. Keep an eye out for that, and keep an eye on ye olde coolant level as well.

Its very rare on VG engines though, those headgasket problems.

Common points of head gasket leakage are...

1.Coolant leaking into the crankcase giving the oil a milky look.
2.Coolant leaking into the combustion chamber causing white smoke while it's running
3.Coolant leaking down the side of the engine block.

Hope this helps you.

First of all unless you do a coolant flush on a regular basis (every two years), its not reccomended to do a flush!

If you know how to replace a head gasket then it might be worth your while, but it's gonna cost big $$ bucks to have a mechanic do it (or pretend to do it ). Since you had your coolant flushed any leakage should only be coolant, so I would reccomend getting a coolant stop leak. There is one that looks like saw dust pellets. but make sure it gets into the radiator and doesn't just float over into the overflow tank. Also don't add a whole lot, just a little at a time until the leak stops. Then change your oil/filter.

And your mechanic is an idot for letting you go through with the flush in the first place.

Also, its probably not the head gasket, and more like a freeze plug thats leaking. Unless you found out otherwise.

Also it's probably not your oil pan leaking, its your main pulley's oil seal. Which costs $2. Once again your mechanic is an idiot.

Excuse me my ignorance but what is freeze plug??? Last time I saw this term I looked into FSM and didn't find any mention of it there.

it's the shiny metal discs you see pressed into the sides of the block. they're there to keep the block from cracking if the antifreeze inside actually freezes. the plugs will push themselves out from the pressure and keep the block from cracking.

that's a freeze plug in layman's terms.

and guys, I've seen plenty of blown head gaskets on these engines. most of them are due to overheating from running out of coolant or too much boost, but I've still seen it. the front main seal isn't the only thing that leaks either. I've found many cases where it's the rubber lip seal on the oil pan- that's right next to the front and rear main seals.. so it looks like a crank seal when it's actually the oil pan.

Don't call the mechanic an idiot until you've seen the car yourself.

Yeah I know I got high on the soap box. Anyway he should at least take it to another mechanic to verify where it's leaking from (or just use some stop leak). Also verify where the oil is comming from.

On a car with that many miles and if the oil is comming from the oil pan and not the main pulley oil seal, then I would suggest to clean the area thats leaking with alcohol, and to put a fresh bead of silicone over the leak. Since any mechanic will charge a lot of money to replace the oil pan seals.

I can't help it, I find that most mechanics are idiots
