fuel pump whines is it failing?

Ok, i took a trip today in the cold /-\$$ weather. its was like 6 here today. anyway, when i was driving i noticed a whine in the back end. i figured it is the fuel pump and that it did it because its cold.
on my way back from the 2 hour drive, car was plenty warm, i came to a light and then gave it gas to leave, well it started to whine again.

So, is this a sign its bout to fail? i know its supposed to make a small noise, but it sounds kinda loud like youre wakin up to someone next door cutting wood with a saw. is there an easy way to check it? Do i need to fix it right away? and roughly how much is it gonna cost to replace it.

quick note it smells like gas really bad outside the car now. and all fuel lines(rubber ones under hood) in the car were replaced less than a month ago.

thanks

Gregg

Sound rather like the same thing happening on mine too - only I get it when the vehicle/surrounding air temp is hot/warm - never cold!. I have had this both before and after replacing a failing fuelpump, and I still get this "whine" (sounds just like pump bearings failing or a relay opening/closing continuously) . I often get this sound when arriving home after a 15Km drive when as I arrive in front of the gate and waiting for it to open, you can hear the whine start (perhaps have been going already but thats when I first notice it) and then it carries on often till after I have switched off and already gotten out of the car - sometimes for 3 or 4 seconds.

I am starting to suspect one of the fuelpump relays in the boot, but just have not had the right mood to start faultfinding or replacing one at a time..............

Would therefore also like to hear from similar experiences and solutions

- this a sign its bout to fail ... cutting wood with a saw -noise
- listen to check it
- Do i need to fix it right away ?????

...no, just drive as long as u can... or until explosion. Makes a nice fireball?

Hey, consider uself lucky. Still got time to figure out whats life all about...

I MEAN DO NOT START even once!

- Ask scrap yard, swap.
- new lines either needs tightening or other parts of fuel lines rotten...

Does anybody have any more insight. I was wondering if anybody else has had to replace this and if there is a writeup on it. I cant seem to find one.

thanks.

I am experiencing the same problem intermittently - normally when the gas tank is getting low. I suspect the fuel pump is starting to fail - possibly a worn bearing - and will be changing it soon, as soon as I can find one from a wreck. The pump itself is a very easy swap - just lift the back seat squab out.
As for the smell of gasoline, check all the hose clamps & check to see if smell coming from under the car or near the filler cap - your vent hose could be blocked.
Good luck

yeah sorry i checked the lines under the hood earlier today. sure enough there is a leak there. i tightened the lines. figured it had to do with the drop from 55 to 7 degree weather over night. anyway yeah im having the fuel pump looked at tomorrow. hopefully i can swap one in there myself.

thanks nismobaron for your insight..
