Just prepare like you're going on a long trip... fluids, tire pressure, etc. Ice scraper. An emergency kit and shovel in the trunk wouldn't hurt either.

I don't know how much snow your part of NY gets, but snow tires would usually be worthwhile too.

Does anybody do any sort of rust proofing for the winter. Like spraying oil of the underside of the car?

Yea well then i dont think mine is working. Its the button with the heat coming up and it turns orange when you press it? When i have it on. The rear doesnt seem to clear up at all. I also put my hand to feel if air is coming up and also its not. I have no idea. do you have to have it on with another button as well maybe? I see it has vents in back but someone on here told me that thats for when you close the doors the air can escape. :sigh:

It doesn't blow. It is electric. You see those lines on the window, That is your defroster.

It is to vent out the car. The air comes through the front vents, goes out the rear vents under the window, and out of the vent in the trunk (drivers side behind the carpet on the bottom).

If all the lines don't work, look for a break somewhere on the problem line(s). Part stores sell a liquid repair kit. Some people can get it to work, some can't. It's worth a shot for about 5-6 bucks IMO.

Measure the broken win wire resistance with dmm to find that cut location.
Once in a lifetime soldered them with thin wire. Works on some, on others tin does not attach.

I have four studded snow tires mounted on steel wheels ready in the garage. When the weather forcaster says "snow" I go out in the garage and install them. I had them on for a week when we had heavy frost, but took them off again. By the sounds of the forecast, I will likely be reinstalling them next week.

I also put the ice scraper in the jockey box and I try to keep my gas tank above 1/2 at all times.

Same thing happened to me with the lines on my window too I think. Lucky for me, it's just the top two lines. So, I think they're really not worth it to fix since they don't defrost an important area. I can still see perfectly fine with them not working.

Studs fly if gas pedal is digital on/off flip flop -type... Its precision sync driving as one brakes only when all your studs are down... The wide tyres are extra bad on snow, dont like that winter feature.
By law we must have em four months a year.

I installed extra shield under the tranny to keep it from wind, also have shield in front of grille for the cold days -10 or so...

Mr. whitemax28, I have a question for you. Why are you asking about winter prep AT THE END OF DECEMBER? You may have missed the bus already.

Just scratching my head, that's all.

i think the best thing u can do is park it indoors. i'm lucky to be able to park mine in the garage.

and warm up ur car before u leave? or are we supposed to do that on warm days too? it ain't that cold here in vancouver. so i hardly do any of the stuff mentioned.

13. Cut the flaps.

(Dunno general US accessories: Scandics have mud ?"flaps"? behind the wheels) They're supposed to be nice, forming a black cup [geisha china -design?]. This is also ? to maximize maxima scooping effect.

Every time u get into the garage with ton on snow [there!], garage will be a swamp next 24hours. Cutting the lowest edge which is bent forward, some snow flakes have at least a chance to drop off while driving...

The rear defroster doesn't have "air" blowing on it like the front does, there arent any real "vents" in the rear (not on my car anyway - a '91). The rear defroster are all those black lines on the rear windshield itself!! The button you are describing is in fact the rear defroster button. There's a little "heat waves" on the button itself and it does light up a little orange light in the middle of the button when turned on. Sounds like your defroster just plain doesnt work...i would suggest leaving windows open in the back at least a crack..that way it will help defrost it somewhat...until you take it to a garage to get repaired!

I was told to ALWAYS let the engine warm up before leaving, ESPECIALLY in winter. You have to give it time to warm up the oil, and let the oil thin out and work its way into all the parts of the engine...Otherwise, all your oil is settled at the bottom and very thick (when cold) and if you start driving, you'll be grinding all the metal parts together because they aren't yet properly lubricated. They say thats one of the worst things you can do to your car (drive it when its cold)...not to mention you can crack a lot of stuff in there because of the sudden heat from the gas burning against these freezing cold parts = major crackage!

My top 2 and bottom 2 rear defroster lines dont work either , but the middle does so I'm not worried about it either - as long as I can see fine too I'm ok...

But if it is cheap to fix that, I'd look into it...

chances are your lines are just broken at some point.
go find permatex part # 15067 and that will fix the broken lines

- Buy synthetic, always perfect viscosity.

- Defroster - permatex, yes, will try that, soldering is too tri c k y.
