tranny maintenance

we all do oil changes every 2500-3000 miles. Is there a regular thing we have to do regularly with the tranny maintenance wise?

from new, I'd recommend every 25k. if not then change fluid when it is no longer red.

I do my tranny fluid once a year. It may be overkill but tranny fluid is cheap and easy to change and a new tranny is expensive. The last time I did it I took out all the old fluid by disconnecting the return line from the radiator. After I did this the hard 1-2 shift that I would get sometimes is gone (watch it come back tom).

There is a plug on the bottom that you open up and drain the fluid. Cant change the filter on these trannies, just drain and refill.

tranny questions? Tranny trick?? In auto vg?

"""""""The "tranny trick" is a modification that involves the simple pulling of a wire harness that resides near the left strut. When you pull the connector, it takes out the line resistance that makes the shifts soft in an automatic transmission Maxima. I have heard both good things and bad things with this "trick" and use it very seldom."""""
Quote from a website

how do i do the trick and what does it do? And is it safe?

how much fluid do I need to put in a auto vg tranny after flushing it.

also how much will getting a vg tranny rebuilt cost on avg?

1 - not safe at all...it makes the tranny shift at full fluid pressure...which will slam the gears. a weak tranny will turn to a dead tranny very quickly.

2 - i think it's like 2-3 quarts for a drain and fill...a "flush" is i believe 10-12 quarts.

3 - anywhere from 1000-3000....YMMV.

for the drain and fill is 4 quarts but for a complete flush is about the amount of what DanNy says as well for the average price in a auto rebuilt which sucks a$$ after it is rebuilt cuz it won't be the same after that so don't do any tricks to ur tranny if its auto. our maximas r prone for auto trannies getting messed up.

well whats the difference in a flush and a drain. whats the best way to do either of them and can i alone do either of them. I know its time to change the fluid for sure.
whats the best way to go about doing this. I just need to know EXACTLY how much fluid i should buy and put in there. I dont want to not have enough or to have too much. Also my dipstick is gay on my tranny so there is no way in hell to tell if its low or high.

First buy a dipstick that works and only then do the oilchange thing.

a drain and fill is like ur changing ur oil in the motor except that the tranny oil travels into the radiator to cool down so when u do the drain and fill ur not draining the oil thats already in ur radiator so thats gonna be there and ur oil is gonna get dirty and black again. when u do the flush is basically draining all the tranny fluid out by putting in fresh fluid in then i believe u start the car so that the oil circulates and then turn it out after about 2 min. now i may be wrong about the method of flushing so u would have to use a Haynes or Chiltons service manual and it will tell u how to do this. its been awhile since my car is now converted to a 5-speed. well after u turn off the car drain the fluid again and then put fresh fluid again. remember ur car has to be turned on while measuring how much fluid is in ur tranny with ur dipstick. the fluid should be on the top 2nd notch of ur dipstick while the car is on though and that will tell u that u have enough fluid.

now to make my point i would do the flush since ur gonna have fresh fluid in the whole tranny rather than havin' to do the drain and fill cuz ur still gonna have old fluid in mixed with fresh fluid and if ur mechanically inclined u can do it on ur own.

also i might just take it to somewhere and get the tranny flushed. sounds like too much pain the a$$ crap. I dont have time to fool with it. Id rather take it somewhere and have it done for like 20$.

In which case its going to be an even bigger pain in the a$$ - if the guys know what they are doing, they will refuse to change the oil for as long as they cannot determine the correct current level of the fluid after a refill - either way, you gonna have to get a working dipstick, and no dipsh1t worth his salt will change the oil without it - so choose how much you really want the oil-change to cost you - dipstick and oil or new tranny?

Okay let me rephrase that. You cant change the filter without removing the tranny and cracking the case open!

you change THAT filter in the pic when you rebuild. most shops would just clean it out unless you had a massive failure in the tranny.

The only thing most people do regularly to 3rd gen auto trannies is rebuild them.
