trans noise

My 92 Max Auto had a strange shift, like something was dragging, then freed up and operated normally. When I parked there was a whirring/gringing noise in park and neutral only, not loud, but quite noticable from the trans. Doesn't seem to change with rpm increase. Car drives normally, but has seemed draggy in reverse when cold. Any ideas? Thanks

Mine made that noise right before it crapped out and needed to be rebuilt. Estimates ranged from 1700-2400, but that included taking it out of the car and putting it back in. Probably a bit cheaper if I just bring them the tranny.

Get the transmission flushed and the filter replaced, then thank your deity of choice every day that it still works.

But I've got a week of free time and I would rather have a 5sp anyways, so I'm getting ready to do the swap.

Trans Toast

My trans started grinding and jerking on the way to the trans shop. It needs a rebuild. They were surprised as it only has 187000 KMs. They say normal life is more like 400000 KM for these. Oh well, the rest of the car is mint, and my wife loves it.

Drain the tranny, check the magnetic plug for metal flakes, dump a fresh quart in and let it drain through, plug it up and fill with Redline or RoyalPurple fluid maybe some prolong stuff, and hope for the best. our trannys are crap without a VB mod.

Somewhat on topic, my tranny died last week and when I drained teh ATF, it was past black. It was like an opaque shiney liquid metal.

that would be a sign of a toasted trans.
I'm guessing you didn't check your fluid very often

It was fine when I got it 6k miles ago, and it was pretty good a month ago. I dont know WTF happened, but something went wrong inside the tranny.
