auto tranny problems.?*@#$

I have 93 Maxima SE which was running very well but now showing up some tranny problems..

When I start from a dead stop it used to make some noise for month or two.
today it looks like it is not shifting properly. I am afraid further driving might worsen the problem. So my car is sitting still.

I was able to put it in Reverse and move it. But on Drive it moves but it is not as quite as used to be.

One more thing I observed - when I move the transmission from parking to any thing drive/reverse it jerks real hard...

Any tips to diagnose the problem.? Can I drive the vehicle with out worsening the problem ..?

my maxima has 90K on it now. I did check trans fluid. it seems to be at proper level and color. I have factory manual but it is not very usefull...for this issue...

Thanks

drop the pan and look what's in there. there are 2 magnets that you need to pay particular attention too.

Hi there..
I am in michigan and weather is not co-operative to do much... so repairing it my self is kind of ruled out.

What are these two magnets..? Is this a common problem?

How much do you think it might cost to get it fixed at tranmission shop.(approximate)

I tried drivng my maxima today. It seems to be OK... No jerking...

magnets are inside the trans pan, and my wholesale cost on having the trans R&R'd is 1795

You say the tranny fluid color is okay, BUT when was the last time you've done a drain and fill? You can't expect your car to run forever with old fluid. If you love your max, you should do a drain/fill once a year. It's very cheap, on the order of an oil/filter change.

The VE also has a screen that can be replaced and inspected with a pan drop.
