knocking noise from behind glovebox.

Hello,

I just installed a blower fan speed amplifier (got on ebay for $10), and solved my "fan only on max setting" problem.

However, there is another.

When the car is started after standing a long time, there is this LOUD "snap, snap, snap, snap" sound that comes from behind the glovebox (kind sounds like playingcards in the spoke of a bicycle wheel).

I thought that it might be the blower motor or even something related to the fan amplifier. I do not think it's the blower motor because it makes the sound even when the climate control is OFF.

I just noticed today (while trying to put new bulbs in my climate control) that when you start the car with the climate control OFF, it still makes this sound, and when you press "ECON", it still makes the sound, but then when you press the "Auto", the sound goes away, only to come back if you press "Econ" or "Off".

I can turn the engine off and on like 2-3 times and the sound goes away immediately or after about 5 minutes, I can goto "econ" or "off" and the sound has automatically disappeared.

Since pressing "Auto" engages the AC compressor, I am wondering if it is related to that? I press "Auto", hear the compressor clutch kick in, and then the snapping sound goes away, and when I turn off the car, or goto "Econ" (which in both case would disengage the AC Compressor), the sound goes away.

Anyway, I am kinda at a loss on what the problem is. Some dude from a local repair shop said that it is the blower motor, but I disagree in that it makes this sound when the blower is OFF!

The sound definitely sounds like it's coming from behind the glovebox, albeit I guess if the AC compressor is making that sound, it would resonate through the vent passages into the cabin.

I would really appreiciate if anyone can give me some advice. Thank you once again,

In this case, believe that dude... or please let the squirrels out!

I f s e p a r a t e -snaps snaps can be heard, really its at real low rew. Dunno the connections, but most probably some voltage going to fan even at OFF position, hence slow motion...

my bet: squirrel -or- dude!

Have you checked all your vacuum hoses on the motor and also inside the cabin - venting/AC flap controls run off that so could possibly explain why ......................

Isn't the blower for the heater just under and behined the glovebox? Sounds like the brushes on the fan. But I'm more than likley wrong as my wife allways says.

some thing very simialar happend to my friend's truck, it turned out to be the thing that diverts the air from the vents to the defroster or the lower vents being pushed from fully open to fully closed and back several times causeing a clicking noise, we used to call it the "heatbeat of america"
