um...
unless your tranny fluid is already somewhat low, you're going to leak fluid. so i'd suggest you drain your tranny fluid.

you're also going to need a 12mm wrench to undo to the 3 bolts on the intermediate shaft bracket.

you don't have to drain the fluid, but I highly recommend it. otherwise, it will automatically drain when you pull the axle out.

I just replaced both of my axles last weekend. The nut is 36mm. Use a 3 foot pipe on a 1/2" breaker bar and you should have no trouble breaking it loose.
Good luck removing the 3 bolts on the axle carrier. Those are a real pain to get at.
You should replace both axles while your in there. If one is bad the other probably isn't far behind.
On a 1-10 difficulty scale I'd give this one a 2.5.

replace the seal(s). at least replace the seal on passenger side since you're already in there. it doesn't take much for them to wear and start leaking on you so you should replace them any time you remove the drive shafts.

the hardest part is just breaking your castle nut loose. mine had 180,000 miles of torque on it. after three 1/2" in drives later i just torched it till i could just strip it off. the damn axle was glowing red all the way through....fun

definitely replace the axle seals.. I replace them every time I pull the axles, even if it's only been a few months. with the heat and petroleum fluids on it, the rubber gets hard and brittle, then when you stretch them shoving an axle in/out, they will not seal properly and leak afterwards.

also, only buy the seals from the dealer. every time I've tried to get them from a parts store, I wind up with the wrong ones.

also check the axles you get from a parts store, as Nissan made about 12 different axles for these cars and some are up to 3/4" shorter (don't ask how or why, but I ran across that just two weeks ago)...

have fun.

I accidently put an axle that the spline was 3/4" too short. But the overall length was correct. Made the tranny vibrate. Scary.

hey i just (as in today) replaced the axle on my 92 SE automatic, took about 4 hours mostly because those 3 bolts r a pain in the a$$ to get to. I didn't drain the fluid, none leaked out. Just be sure to keep everything in order because u have to take off the brake, the steering knuckle, and all types of little things. Its not as bad as it sounds, give it a shot if u need ne help feel free to email me josh564738291@sbcglobal.net

No you don't.

unbolt the three nuts on the ball joint and the whole knuckle and brake assembly swings out of the way.

Thats the method I used, and my dad got a little pissed about burnt, metal particle-laden tranny fluid all over his driveway.

if you didn't drain any fluid then you're running with too little tranny fluid. check the level and top it up.

If the car is still level, it shouldn't drain out much, if at all. the problem is that 95% of us don't use a lift, so the tranny is tilted backwards. Then when you pull the axle, it runs out of the holes.

well im finished. It took about 5 hours because of my friends goofing and those support bearing screw. but I've got no more clacking. i checked my fluid level before we started and it was full. bu when I finally got the axle out, not a drip came out and if im not mistaken the spline didnt have any on it. now let me know if that was weird or not. but other than that thanks
