Oil Filter Fell OFF!!

I last changed my oil 6/11/04 and have put on over 2000 miles. I bought the oil filter after they stoped making the VE oil filter. I discused this with the parts person and he assured me that the 15208-9E000 is the proper replacement. Well just driving along and thud, what the hell was that? was that my oil filter. Pulled over and it sure was. Now I don't know if it caused much damage. What Oil filter should I use?!!!!

Is the 15208-9E000 the wrong filter? The 9E000 is much smaller than the original, like the toyota is described as. Or do you think I stripped the filter nipple. It stayed on for 2000 miles. I think I will try the toyota filter.

Sounds kind of fishy. Who would ever hear a thud and think it was their oil filter falling off? You must have had some idea it was loose. Come clean--why did you think that?

you mean you don't know if you stripped it or not? if it's not spinning on easy by hand then you got the wrong filter. if you cranked it down then it's VERY likely the threads are done. the filter mount is aluminum..so it's not something that strong. stayed on for 2000 miles?? did it work itself loose all of the sudden? didn't you notice a massive oil loss? i mean the filter just doesn't unscrew itself in 1 full shot while driving.

I heard a thud, looked in my rearview mirror and saw a little grey canister booncing accross the road. I immediatley pulled off the road and shut the engine off. The oil pressure light came on.

Whatever one you use, make sure it fits and that you tighten it down to spec.

you must not of installed it properly obviously...you are suppose to spin the oil filter on...until it won't spin freely...then snug tighten it 3/4 a turn, and make sure you put a lil fresh oil around the seal so the filter don't leak.
I use WIX oil filter # 51394...I heard the WIX brand works really good on the anti drain back or whatever the hell its called....its suppose to help oil circulate alot faster to help prevent dry starts from no oil during first initial startup for the day....

If you screwed up the threads, I have that part from my old engine. It unbolts from the block (so it is fairly small), but I am not sure how hard it is to install with the engine in the car, but if you are interested, send me a PM.

chris

Oh, and just use the Toyota filter recommended in the stickies. It's not very hard to find and it's not that expensive.

I got the same part too if you need it...i would put 2 new o rings on it tho, not a big deal...I think it is called the oil filter housing....

OH YA...and for those of you earlier who were saying to me that the oil pressure sender bolts to the engine block...your wrong...its on the oil filter housing.....HAH I tried to load a pic of mine but the digi battery died, and im too lazy to plug it in

The oil filter takes 8-10 turns before it makes contact with the gasket plate, then 1 1/2 turns after it makes contact with the gasket plate....if you unscrew the filter 1 1/2 times , oil will flow out of the filter. With the engine running, it would have pumped out 4 qts of oil in a matter of seconds. Also the oil pressure light would have come on right away....way before the filter could vibrate all the way off the car. Sounds a little fishy to me too.

I have seen this happen before on a VE engine.

Friend of mine mistakenly used the wrong oil filter, and it would only screw on about 1.5 threads. It was because the female threads were recessed into the filter, and only the first thread or so was grabbing. The gasket was making full contact, but the thing vibrated off while driving. Of course he caught it immediately, so no damage done.

Use the Toyota filter.

Don't worry avusblue92se I believe this is possible... I had almost the same thing happen to me (1992 VE5) Except my filter didn't fall completely off. The dealer who sold me the car had changed the oil and put the wrong filter on. I drove the car with out a problem for 2000 miles and then the oil filter popped off... went to NAPA and asked for a Nissan Maxima oil filter and got the same filter from them. I put it on thinking it was just a problem with the other filter but it popped off while I was backing out of the garage...the threads (or the threaded hole) were the wrong size of something stupid like that...It would tighten up like it is susposed to but if you turned it a 1/4 turn more it would pop off the threads and be loose again... Somebody on the .org gave me the right part number and I never had that problem again... BTW the toyota filter works well even though it seems like it is the wrong size.
