Just an idea ...

My understanding is that maxima.org owns all the posts on this website.

There are same questions and "problem" posts I see apearing again and again with time.

So why wouldn't maxima.org sell CD-ROM with selected "good" posts/write-ups/pictures by each maxima "generation" or even combined?

I think it is a a good way to raise money and help out maxima owners.

I nominate you to spearhead the effort. You'll need to pore through the years' worth of old threads, find relevant posts, assemble them together, make them flow nicely, compile a set of topics, and format them in a form that is easily accessible on the CD. Shouldn't take more than a few hundred hours

sure...then you'll have 1000 people demanding their CD to be overnighted (because u know the org folks never heard of shipping times).

then if there's any errors on it people will complain and demand their money back.

if it does work then you'll see everyone making copies of it and selling it on other forums and ebay trying to profit from your work.

then if it really does well people will ask for a cheaper price or a GD...even if you sell it for $5 each they will still ask for a discount.

I really appreciate your humor and sarcasm. Hope you'll appreciate mine - I usually charge $120/h for a 1 month assignment (I’m in consulting business). Will you sponsor this "event"?

But seriously ... I just think it is very convenient to have things at the same place (say CD disk) instead of searching or adding to favorites.

Also, if you work on your car and need to see some pictures or descriptions, I'd prefer to take a laptop with all I need, instead of searching website or printing hardcopies.

Well, I agree - there are many things to think about. But maxima.org owns tons of information here, on maxima forums. I'm sure even some 3d party might be interested in "makeing" this CDs (say annual issues).

If you ask me - I still think that CD disk is a better option (may be combined with search option).

LOL!!! That's right!
It's about $100-105 this days (I hope US$ will pick up soon because all my savings are in US funds ... exchange rate is down from 1.6 to 1.2)

The project is a bit too huge to undertake I think. Who would have the right to decide what constitutes a "good" post or thread? The person doing the sorting would also have to understand the concept involved and then decide if some little tidbits are useful or not. Sometimes you find tiny nuggets of valuable info buried under pages of utter junk. Even if such a thing were available, I simply wouldn't trust it as the final word, because it cannot be as informative and comprehensive as doing your own searching.

I say just donate and be done with it. The server is running at a good clip (most of the time) now, and it's not like you have to donate every year or anything. I don't remember what the expiry date is when I donated, but it was a surprising bargain for the amount of info you get access to in exchange.
