Wheels and Tires

hey guys, im thinking about purchasing some 00-03 17" Maxima wheels with a 40mm offset and i have found 3 tire sizes which SHOULD fit accoring to tires.com

215/50/17
225/45/17
225/50/17

my question is: do any of you guys run any of these wheel/tire combos and have a problem with rubbing? Do you use any spacers? Do you have any pics with any of the above wheel/tire combo?

and will an Intrax/ST drop in the future be a problem

thanks and any help is greatly appreciated

ps thanks to everyone who helped me on my exterior apperance thread, it turned out great

The most common size for people to run are 225/45/17s. I found that the 215/50/17s are the closest 17 to the stock tire size and they usually run around $8-10 less per tire. Of course, you lose some width (traction) that way. There are a few guys with 235/45/17s, but you have to have just the right offset and/or spacers to keep them from rubbing the struts.

The offset of the wheel is going to determine if it rubs more than the tire size. I am pretty sure those 5th gen wheels should be fine. I have seen a few 3rd gen with them and I would be fairly certain they had on 225/45/17s.

I have some nice 03 g35 wheels with orig tires. tires wont fit 3rd gen though.
Your best bet is to just go with the 225/45/17 because the 235/45/17 and 215/50/17 will most likely rub at a full turn, which can be a little anoying when you want to do a u-turn.
I had 235/45/17 kuhmo ecsta asx tires on my wheels and they rubbed a little at full turn so i got the 225/45/17 (special order) and they were much better. Never tried 215/50/17.
Also the 225/45/17 felt a little faster then the 235/45/17 ones, but a little less handling, and a little harder on the road. Wheels and tires are all about tradeoffs.

Im new to the wheels and tires catergory in a car. It's time for some new tires in the upcoming month or so and I was thinking about making them a bit thicker and cooler looking then the 205's but I have the stock GXE wheels and can't afford new wheels. Would I be able to increase tire size without changing my rims? Thanks.

I wouldn't bother changing tire size unless you get new rims. You are still going to have the same sidewall height unless you have tires that are too small. If your tires are too small, it will increase your wheel gap and throw off your speedo.

Either buy the stock size or save your money for all new 16 or 17-inch rims so you can put on lower profile tires that match up to the original circumference of your stock tires.

i swear im not thread jackin

you tried putting g35 rims on your car....
did you have the 18s or 17s? and what was the offset of the rim when you were putting them on....im looking to get g35 coupe 18s for my max soon. the offset of the rim is +30mm but im told we should have about 38 offset, so what would i need to do get them to not rub?

i want those g35 coupe rims because i havent seen anyone with a 3rd gen have then on. but if the offset is gonna screw me i wont waste my money or time. are spacers a good idea in this case? it just sounds like 'not cool' to me.... thanks for any info and sorry for thread jacking.

I have the g35 sedan 5 spokes. they look a lot like Matt's wheels. I never tried them on my car bc they still have the orig tires on them and they definately wont fit w/ those, the tries are just to big. Offset is not that big of a deal, i have 17x7 wheels w/ a 45mm offset and its fine. most people say optimal size is a 17x8 with a 38mm offset.

I agree with Red92MaxSE, save your money and get some nice wheels and tires, it will make your max look very nice and clean.

I run 245-45-17s and it rubs just a tad in the rears when I hit a huge bump or when 3 other 4dsc fat ***** are riding in my car for lunch.

I had 235-45-17s and they were perfect. The G35 wheels and tires (225-45 and 245-45s) should be fine.

Wheel size and allowable offset depends what kind of tires you want to fit. You're not supposed to run 235 or 245 on 17x7 wheels, only 225 maximum. This gives you more offset leeway which is why +40mm can work.

I'm not sure where this +38mm offset figure is coming from, but you really want 30-35mm offset for a 17x7.5 or 17x8 wheel if you want to run 235 size tires. Wheels like Jeff's 'Stang wheels are at about +30mm to +32mm (depending on reference).

I have 2 sets of 17's for my car. I have a set of Sacchi S1 wheels with some 225-45-17's Wanli tires. They are fine on my car and I have Suspension Technique springs and they don't rub at all and I don't have spacers. I just got a set of 17" 350Z wheels (4 front wheels since the rears are too wide) through work for a price I'm not allowed to say with some 215-50-17 Kumho 711's. Those too fit fine with no spacers and they don't rub at all. I work at Discount Tire and I've seen way too many accidents and stupid mistakes when it comes to wheel spacers. The way I look at it is, if it fits, great. If it doesn't fit, don't use spacers, just get a different wheel. We are actually not even allowed to install wheel spacers or even mess with them. Pics of my car with my Sacchi wheels are on my cardomain and I've yet to get some pics of the 350Z wheels, but I'll have them up soon.

sometimes discount tire has returns and they will sell them cheap, negotiation is the key, shop around in your town and you may be able to find some. shipping can be pita, if you order them, so you probly want to buy them localy.

yea I have 2002 SE rims on my max with 225/50/17 tires. I just purchased 215/50/17 tires because the speedometer will stay more accurate due to how close they are in diameter to the stock tires.

What kind of discount do you get? I don't have anything specific in mind. Just some 5-spoke 17's. I could also drive down to get them. I can't be more than a couple hours north of you.

IIRC, Traverse City is up in Michigan kinda close to Mackinac Island. I believe the drive is more like 6-7 hours! lol My buddy has a place up in Charlevoix which is about 40 miles out of Traverse and it takes us about 6-7 hours to get there. What kind of discounts do I get? It all depends on what you're getting and what kinda mood my manager is in. lol But, just tell me what you guys would like a price on and I'll get back to you.

I'm having a hard enough time getting 8" wide wheels to fit, I really doubt it.
