Need Advice... Tranny swap?

I have a 92 GXE that has been through everything with me. I bought it low miles, and put 70k on it in the last 2.5years, and that car has been through hell (4 accidents; 1 from previous owner, 2 not my fault, and the most recent>>>), where most recently it was parked and we woke up to a totalled rear end, along with tire marks from a drunk driver slamming into it and squealing off. The rear quarter panel/tailight/gascap area were destroyed, and the trunk won't open (to approximate damage). I have a quarter panel available to me for around 130$, but labor to put it on is extensive and circles 1.2-2k, out of my league.

A friend of a friend has a 93SE with a fried tranny he wants to let go for cheap. The engine and body are in great shape, so I was wondering if our trannies are compatible and I could swap my tranny to his (NOTE: mine is gxe his se), or if I should do a complete powertrain swap, or something else. I have minor mechanics experience, but this is beyond me, as is the extensive body welding required. This car's powertrain is in truly remarkable shape, and I can't bear to be driving around with black plastic taped on it :-\. Prices are a main concern, and if anyone knows where to find perhaps other 'dead' maximas or can provide any info/advice, its all appreciated. Thanks in advance for reading this lengthy post,

Josh

Buy your buddies car
part yours out
buy a 5 speed and swap that in

the tranny from yours is different than his, so it wouldn't be a straight forward swap by any stretch

So they aren't compatible, but where can I find the trannies needed, any advice there? My other consideration is to try and find a compatible GXE and do a swap, because i still expect lots of life from my powertrain. If you guys have any ideas on where to find this stuff, hit me up... or any other advice on options I'm not thinking of also appreciated.

Okay:

1) You have an old beat up auto GXE with "low miles" I guess. It will take many thousands of $ to fix.
2) Your friend has a SE 5-sp he wants to sell you for "cheap" and the only thing wrong with it is the tranny.

So for 30hp more + the joy of a 5-sp, you WILL WANT TO FIX your auto GXE that's all beat to hell?

Compare costs of 1) and 2). Then use some common sense and what happens.

I don't care so much for "the joy of a 5 speed," and a car with no tranny doesn't drive; a car with a powertrain and damaged body does. I'm trying to take advantage of the fact that my powertrain is still in good shape, but I'm having trouble finding a 'dead' GXE or a SE tranny. :-\

I am assuming the SE is currently an AT.

Do this:

1) Buy friend's SE.
2) Sell beat up GXE.
3) Use money from sale of GXE to buy a tranny for the SE.
4) Drive away happy with an AT Maxima with 30 more hp.
