Just got a 3rd gen Maxima!
I bought a ‘92 GXE last night for 5 bills! My 5th gen is in the shop for a while and I needed something to get around in until its done. This car rocks! It has ~150k, the radio is jacked up, the struts are blown, the bushings are dead, the alignment is off, but the engine and tranny are still going strong. Good old nissan. Anyway, just thought I would say hey to everyone in the 3rd gen forum since I will be in here more often and I'm sure I will break something soon enough.
Quick question...Is there anything specific I should check or watch out for with this year and model?

Hahaha your avatar is hilarious. The tranny was actually replaced about ~30k ago. It shifts well, nice and smooth without slipping. What’s the power/comfort button do btw? Shifts latter/faster on power mode? As for the struts, yeah I would like to slap to toks in there or something but the suspension seems a little beyond repair. If ES or someone makes a full set of bushings I might replace the bushings and put new struts in. I really wish the suspension worked. This car is so much smaller than my 5th gen it seems like it would be a lot of fun.

You'll love the way the auto VG kicks in at the 1-2 shift at WOT. I don't know if anyone makes bushings but knowing some of the third gen thinkers people can possibly conjour up some polyurethanes. The power comfort only changes the shift point at less than 1/2 throttle IIRC. Power = higher shift <4k rpm, Confort = Lower shift 3k rpm, Auto (middle) = midrange shift point 3.5k rpm. All these numbers are from the head. I know when the tranny shifts just by looking at the tachometer but I don't have one in front of me. Treat her good and she'll treat you right.

good luck with it. I have had 4 running 3rd gens (2SEs and 2GXEs)and 2 parts car 3rd gens (1SE, 1GXE).
there are of course the common problems such as exhaust studs breaking, injectors failing, transmissions failing...plus other minor inconveniences.

he has a '92. i don't think the HUD came out on that model year. i believe Nissan stopped it at '91. i currently have a spare unit laying around but i just need the main control unit and it will be a complete HUD system. and i also have about 3 auto climate controls as spares so if ur interested let me know.

BTW: kind of dangerous telling a mechanic to keep your car as long as you want, you might not see it back any time soon
