Bose problems

3 speakers are dead and I'm curious about my options. I want to put a cd player in, so what am I looking at to completely replace everything? I'm not looking for a full-blown system, just a cd-player that sounds nice. If I don't go that root, what am I looking at to repair the Bose speakers. I looked at the couple pages in the stickies and was just wondering what is the smartest path I should take.
thanks in advance

If you're stock speakers are dead then I'd replace them all and the hu. Leaving some BOSE speakers in will require you to get an adapter which tacks on another $50 to whatever the cost of the CD player is. I think you should replace it all. If you're interested I have a HU and speakers that I just replaced for sale.

the BOSE are not worth it to repair, but I doubt that the speakers are blown, just the amps. If so, I would first try to bypass the amps, all 4 of them as you will need to do so anyway if you were to put in new speakers. For CD players, you can spend whatever amount you wish, but if you're looking for a decent entry level cd player, look to pay anywhere from $150 - $250 -ish, as for the speakers, the rear are 6x9s, you can spend around 120-200 bucks for a pair, depending on your taste, for the front, they are 4" if you are using the stock BOSE enclosure, and they run for around 50 bucks a pair. Hope this info help, and please, try to install the things yourself, they are super easy to do, and the stores charges an arm and a leg to do such work. You will also need a wiring harness adaptor if you don't want to splice into the wires, those run for 10-15 bucks, and you will also need an antennae adapter, forgot the price, but internetautomart carries them, and he should chime in soon.

I have a pioneer deck ($150 ish a few years ago) and had the bose set up without the adapter. The front amps went and the speakers made the standard hiss. The rears were fine. I just replaced the front 4" with infinity. Just a heads up, the normal 4" isn't quite a bolt in replacement if you keep the bose sound box. I had to buy 1/2" plywood and build a spacer to fit into the triangle shaped space of the bose speakers. BTW, both speakers were in surprisingly good shape confirming the notion that the amps are crap.

What wires do I need to cross to bypass the amps?

Its easier to see when you have the thing right infront of you, but when you do, for the rear, open up the little box right next to the speaker and you will see four wires, on the board itself, it will denote with wire will do what, just cut all 4 wires off the board, and connect the negative speaker wire to the negative terminal, and positive straight to the positive. I hope someone can chime in soon to give you a better idea, but thats all I can remember from the last time I bypassed mine, all four amps works the same, so if you did one of them, you will know how the rest will go.

How's the sound if I bypass the amps? I think I might just get an hu and use it until the speakers blow, then finish replacing everything.

IMO, it still sounds "beefy" with the amps bypassed since the newer HU comes with built in amps, which works almost the same as the independent amp stock set up, except it works better.

you dont cross any wires. you just bypass them. meaning instead of the wires running into the amp and then the speaker, they simply go into the speaker.

go to
http://www.geocities.com/bracecraig/maxima/stereo.html

and

http://www.geocities.com/bracecraig/.../speakers.html

this should be all you need to get the job done, it was all i needed sorta.

oh fyi, i think its james92se whos got 6.5 inch speaker pods he makes for front and you could also do the 4x6 in front with the pods from a nonbose 3rd gen.
