ethanol?

I had to stop at a 76 station, i usually get shell v power.....but i was low and dropped my g/f at airport....I read on the pump "can contain up to 10% ethanol"....isn't that **** that eats our injectors?

10% ???

1-2% is ok in winter; keeps fuel lines from freezing. But then ten... maybe its cheaper to produce.

Gives less power, should not be a problem.

10% is the standard here in NY, it replace the other chemical that was in gasoline a few years back. My old car sputtered on it, so I had to add a bottle of isoprop. to remove any small amount of water in it.

yes 10%. Every gas station around here has a 10% blend

Ethanol burns cleaner and more complete and it raises the octane index of the gasoline. Running upto a 10% mix of ethanol is covered under every car in the United States warrenty.

Less power only really applies to E85 fuel.

E85 ? Dunno whats that. Sounds like an autobahn to italy...

But alcohol energy content is less, about ½ of gasoline. Brazilians use it a lot (is it all alcohol???) 'cause of menem...

So thatswhy u get so little HP, always 5% les than we eu prisoners...

They did it here during the winter to reduce pollution. cars run richer in the cold, so our wonderful gooberment has decided to help us out by adding 10% ethanol. the engine produces much less pollution, but also is down on power a few %.

One rumor I heard is that there has recently been a bill going through congress to increase that to 20% next year. eek.

In Minnesota we have it currently at 10%, it is made from corn so it helps support the ag farmers in the area. It is more ecostly to produce so we typically will have higher gas prices than the national average.

And yes, they are considering a bill to increase it to 20%, but it will take years to get approved and a jump from 10% to 20% presents much more financial and production challanges than going from 0% to 10%

Washington state just pushed a Bill (Bill 1826) into congress to make all states blend 10% ethanol into gas

So the gas we use at the pump actually robs the car of some power? Interesting. I heard about "race gas". That probably doesn't contain any ethanol.

Ok, here I'll make it clear for you guys. The 10% ethanol will eat through the injectors on our cars... I've lost 2 to the stuff already, and probably have another 2 heading out the door. I'm going to replace all of them when I get back.

I still wish I had the injector to show you what it does. Pitted beyond belief. And one of them had seized due to it. I have had no problems what so ever since I stopped putting that stuff in. In fact, after I had the tank flushed, the car has been running like a champ.

Then I brain farted after I came back from a trip back home. I had to fill up once I was inside SD, and I brain farted. Sure enough, the next day, the car started sputtering again. It's cleared up a lot since then, but it still has a light sputter at idle. I'm hoping some Sea Foam will clear up the rest of it.

I've put in 92 octane at times (92 has 10% ethanol vs. 91 and is $.03-.04 cheaper)but normally I fill up with 91. I hope it won't bite me in the butt in a couple months down the road

I've been driving VE's for 3 years now. Almost all of the gas around here is 10% ethanol. I have not once had an injector fail.

If it's sputtering, it may be water in the tank. Any little bit of water will gel up with the ethanol (grain alcohol) and make the car run poorly. I had this problem all the time with my 86 200sx and I found that by adding a bottle of dry gas (but it MUST be isopropanol (rubbing alc)) the problem stopped after a tank. I did this every few months.

The ethanol will have the same effect as the isopropanol, so you'd be wasting you money on the stuff. Both alcohols are anhydrous. I used to buy isopropanol, until we switched over from the MTBE winter additive a couple years ago. About 6-7 years ago they found out that the MTBE was not fully burning and was showing up in soil samples, eventually adding to all the other polutants causing cancer.

That's why I'm going to use sea foam. And also, it couldn't be water, when I had the tank flushed, I also went over the whole thing checking the seal. That's why I have been led to the last possible thing... the ethanol additive. I ran around for a whole 4 months, and even took a trip to TN without a problem. The problem didn't reoccur till I brain farted and added the ethanol fuel on accident.

I think my car is slightly sputtering now to get back at me... she loved the 93 down south... LOL. Now that I'm back in SD, and using 91, she's getting mad . My baby is tempermental... so I keep her pampered as much as possible.
