92 maxima 160k miles smoke from exhaust

Most notably when car is under load (like pulling a trailer) constant smoke from exhaust. Also, after idling for several minutes (like sitting at a drive thru), I get a big puff of smoke on take-off. Car has not seen a lot of love/maintenance, so I'm curious if there are some sensors, etc. that could be replaced to alleviate the problem. The car doesn't smoke noticeably under normal use, and otherwise runs great!!! Also burns about 1 qt of oil every 700ish miles.... no oil leaking onto the street, though.

Sounds like worn rings or valve stem seal leakage. No easy fixes. But you can try a 10w40. Or some oil that can condition the seals to help them swell.

Yeah, what Jeff said. also if the oil is really noticably black only like a hundred miles or so after an oil change then that would most likely be due to blow-by, which would be a piston ring problem. But, yeah again what Jeff said, try using a heavier weight oil. Good Luck

Starting point: swap air filter, distr cap, wires, plugs... clean ALL connectors.

Q.: The exact color of the smoke?

- blue, engine worn as said already (oil consumption points here)
- blk, bad fuel burn

>If blue, check cyl compression. --->If ok, change all (hardened?) valve shaft seals. Can be done engine on, with cyl inj compression tool. relatively cheap... --->If not ok, start looking for used engines and test the tricks jeff told...

Finally ran the compression check - all cylinders 170+ psi except for middle one on front bank, which is at 140, so no question where the problem is. Guess I'll either be putting in a new engine soon or getting a new vehicle - sucks, because it still runs almost perfectly!!!
