Sporadic starting problems?
Sporadic starting problems?
Would love to do a search but will save purchasing the membership until my son comes back from his tour in Iraq later in the year. He got home tonight for his 14 days so you may see him posting.
His Dad went to start his car the other day and it wouldn't start. Not a battery problem, lights as bright as they can be. He first thought it was the clutch engage safety thing because he thought it wasn't connected. Got it started. And started back up the few more times he tried that night.
Tonight we go to get it to meet him at the airport and it won't start again. His Dad messed, and messed to no avail, then after the key being in the "on" position for maybe 20 or so minutes, it started. We drove to restaurant and went in and ate. Came back out, tried 30 minutes wouldn't start. Finally jump started it with rolling and popping the clutch.
My son may have more info if he posts tomorrow but I wanted to post to see if any ideas immediately came to mind so he can fix the problem ASAP. He's left it running everywhere he's been tonight but that's not a solution. He did say that the ignition relays or something else were warm while we were trying to get it started at the restaurant.
The first time, my ex suspected the clutch engager thing, the second time, he couldn't relate the starting to anything. Just one of the times he got in to try it again, it started.
Any ideas? Or things that we could rule out? Any help, especially fast one, would be most appreciated. He's got 14 days home and I'd love for him to be able to solve the problem tomorrow. He might on his own but historied behavior usually is a great place to start for ideas on what the problem could be. Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions?
THis is a 92 SE 5 speed, 102K miles, that we just bought several weeks ago. It hasn't been started much in that time, but for the test drive it started right up and earlier when his Dad was messing with it, it did too. And again, dosn't seem to be battery "charge" related, no dimming whatsoever, as bright as can be expected. It doesn't crank or make noise, you just hear the clutch engaging and nothing.

Clutch sw gets its input from disarmed burglar alarm. Is it ok? It activates clutch interlock relay. That or its + or gnd bad.
You may bypass them by shorting ign sw 4&5 pins.

This is OWhatAThrill's son btw, Yeah, i had noticed that the anti-theft system....when it starts with no problem, the light is blinking as i start it, but when its not starting, the lights not on at all, and also cant get the system armed after trying to start to no avail, by locking door from outside, etc. etc.
kinda had a hunch that it had to do with the anti-theft....but hummers have no such thing, so i wasnt sure
any tips on how to cross-troubleshoot to see if thats the actual problem? and if anyone has had that problem before, any way to correct it without having to purchase more parts? (either way would be fine, i just want it fixed
thanks in advance

alright! found the problem, the door lock (key portion) is sticky, and if not turned all the way (not just enough to open lock, but enough to deactivate anti-theft) then the anti-theft clutch override is enabled....just had a hunch and checked it out...time to go install my short throw shifter
then go get some graphite or try to repair/order new locking mechanisms for doors and trunk....and one more thing....as a 2nd time max owner...i cant find the freaking trunk release button inside the cab, thought it was in the glove compartment on my 93 SE....but not there on the 92....i'm probably tired and being retarded and overlooking it, but who knows, thanks for the help guys
