seat belt warranty repair on a 1991?

I've read reports that maligned the motorized shoulder belt since the 3rd gen was introduced. I'm sure my 91 is no different than most others with some miles, meaning that the driver's side no longer works. I have the owner's manual and the warranty booklet that came with the car. I read the warranty booklet and learned that the seatbelts and related components are covered for life. I called the local dealer today and he tried to weasel out of the repair saying he could only cover vehicles up to 10 years old. I thought this was bunk and called the dealer where I bought my new Titan and asked my service writer there about it. He said they had replaced seat belt parts on a 1988 recently with over 300k on the clock. The local dealer called me back and acted like he was doing me a huge favor and said they "could look at it". Of course he couldn't get it in for a few days. But hey, if they'll fix it for free, I'll let them! Has anyone else gotten theirs fixed for free?

All dealerships that I have worked for have replaced seat belt components for free. The feds have passed some serious restraint laws over the last few years. I think that, coupled with the threat of crazy money lawsuits, keeps the dealer fixing them. Even luxury cars. Automatic shoulder belts are the best candidate for free replacement. I know for a fact that these manufacturers do it for free: Mazda, Ford, and GM. Make a big stink about the safety issue. My friend even got a free rental car because they couldn't work on it at the time and wouldn't let him drive it home.

Good luck.

i want replacement belts too but only because the belts are disgustingly dirty and stained with feces, at least that's what it looks like. thinking about slicing a thread or two on each one to begin the fraying process. anyone have any tips?

It's not hard to tell when car upholstery has been intentionally damaged. If I were to try to trick a dealership into replacing the belts, I would focus on the mechanical portion. A shady person may, for instance, pull the seatbelt to its limit and somehow gunk up the retractor until it hangs. That may get it changed faster. After all, it's a one piece replacement. However, tampering with a seatbelt is a little like playing russian roulette. You may have a little better odds, but I would steer clear of it anyway. We won't even go into the moral dilemma of cheating to get something you want.

I had mine replaced under warranty a few months ago and I had some difficulty getting them to follow the rules. I had to go through a couple of guys until I got to the service manager and showed him the warranty book. The first guys didn't want to do it and said my car was too old and then the other guy said that it only covered the mechanical parts. I fought them and eventually they fixed it. Everything was free, as it should be. They don't give a loaner car, though (this info is also in the warranty book).

My driver's side seatbelt was frayed from where zippers rubbed it over time just below chin level.

All Nissans built after (or during?) 1989 have a lifetime warranty on seat belts. All of the information is in the warranty book. Hectic, you can't take them in because they are ugly, but if one of the front ones is "frayed" I know you could get them to replace it. The nice thing is the front seatbelts are all one assembly, so they have to replace both of them.

What if I don't have this "warranty booklet"? Is there any way that I can still get my seatbelts replaced? I purchased my car from a private seller and he didn't even have the owners manual.

All of that information is in the computers and reference books at the Nissan dealer. You don't need your warranty book, it is not specific to you car. It just has the information in it, which makes it easier to rub the noses of the service goons in it.

I had problem with the local dealer at first. A call to Nissan 1-800(somthing nissan) got a confirmation number and went back to the dealer with it. They fixed then. I dropped off tye car 4 times before it was done correctly.

I hope you have better luck. They will fix the seat belt when you insisted.

I have this continual problem of my seatbelt not retracting up. Last year i had my local dealership replace the tracking and but to no avail it still doesn't work. Actually it works sometimes and not others... and i have no idea why. Sometimes I hit the dash and it makes it come up... anybody have a bright idea? Could it be the motor?

Yep...
Go talk to John at Dermac Nissan. I'm certain he'll take care of this for you.
As long as you or any other shop haven't attempted to fix the area, the dealership has to do it for ya.

Just out of curiousity, how does this apply to the recall for the filler tube rust spreading to the seat belt bolts? Would the rust in that area be covered based on the need to maintain functional seatbelts?

I would guess that they are a seperate issue, but I think most of the filler tube fixes were based on the fact that the seatbelt actually pulled out of the rusted metal.

In other words, they aren't going to fix the filler tube issue just to satisfy the seatbelt warranty. They will likely replace the seatbelt mount as part of the filler neck recall.

I dont think that the automatic seatbelts are covered in the recall...I think they were just the rear driver side seatbelt that is by the gasoline tank because the seatbelt is bolted to the wheel housing in which after extensive corrosion/rusting, in an accident, the seatbelt will just literally pop/fallout from the housing unit.

But then again, Im 19, Im a female and apparently a complete moron.

Seatbelts should be covered as it's a safety issue. Take it to the dealer to find out the real information

first off, its a warranty, not a recall. second its a safety issue so yes to better sell a vehicle a lifetime warranty is offered bu nissan. as for you being 19 and a girl, that doesnt matter, youre still a complete moron i saw in another post you said you dont know crap when it comes to cars, yet you give advice like youre on the pit crew for some nascar team. i think if you dont know what the hell youre saying, just dont say it.
