When my alternator went out, the battery light was on. I was only able to drive it for a little while and everything was just dimming and no matter how much gas i gave it its was only getting worse. And i have lost my alternator twice and both times i never had a warning sign like that. I hope this helps.

I think it is definately alternator related, and probably a bad alternator. But also if you're idle is too low, like below 600 - 700, alternators need a minimum speed to rotate.. so that could also possibly be it.

If you do change it, unless your battery is fairly new, then replace it also. Bad battery and alternator go hand in hand, when one goes it will take the other down with it.

Damn, I'm having this problem too... but just the headlights dim... Hopefully its just my battery or too low idle... Since I have no time to work on my car(s) at the moment!

Typically alt is floating: add a ground wire to chassis or engine block from alt shroud. The possibility is 50/50 between regulator /brushes /grounding.

After changing the new alt, this floating situation becomes fixed: One starts to think that the old alternator was bad, although it was only the grounding issue. It will return one year later, and ruin the battery.

You may test his by adding a jumper wire. Whatever the result, if you want long lifetime you add one gnd wire.

it's your voltage reg malfunctioning, which is internal to the alternator.

Or it may simply be a loose belt

My alt has 130k miles + on it and still running. I opened it up a couple years back, and its definitly on its way to mechanical failure.
