I'm pulling a VG and I can't find a safe place to pull from. Got the chain, got the hoist but still no safe place to hoist from. The transmission is off the car already so i can't hook on to the tranny mounts.

Can anyone help me out here?

The reason you cant find a good place to pull from is the engine isnt designed to be pulled. Youre supposed to lower it down, and Nissan has 2 slings (I believe around $15 each) to help you lower it down. (These can also be used to pull it, which is what I always do)
The first time I pulled my engine, I did it with chains and I bolted it onto the trans and the A/C bracket....

use the AC/alternator bracket at the front...
then i used one of the mounting holes for the tranny...just put a long bolt through it with your sling.

exhaust manifolds still on it?
wrap a chain around them and use them.. then run another one off the side to the tranny bellhousing mounts for stability.

if i could get the car high enough i'd lower the engine for sure...unfortunately that's not an option i have to pull from the top. i may take a look at one of those slings though.

the manifolds are off.

i've been eyeing up the a/c compressor bracket. i'll rig something up for one of the lower transmission brackets. then i should be fine.

Use most anything you want. AC brackets and maybe an intake manifold bracket in the back.

yes, exactly why i won't pull from the exhaust manifold...i can't imagine what a disaster that would be....

Last engine I swapped had 3 studs broken on each manifold, and it was swinging from a chain strapped to the manifolds when we picked it up at the junkyard. I was literally afraid the engine was going to go flying it was swinging and bouncing so bad. thing never fell.

Of course, when we got it back to the house I pulled the manifolds and swapped all the studs..

I'm scared to even look at my studs. I heard that these can be responsible for a clicking sound at start-up near the rear of the engine.

i guess it's not so bad to hook up the chain from there but i just keep picturing the potential disaster of an engine falling on its oil pan.
i'll pull it on friday from the a/c bracket and lower rear transmission bracket.

did you have the rad and fans out just to remove the engine or for something else?

You need to take them out or you will probably damage them. Plus there's no room if you leave it in. Of all the things to take out the radiator/fans are probably the easiest. 5 min maybe?

y u pullin' ur motor out for? new motor? beefing it up?

well i already got my motor since Jeff and Matt helped me out on this i eventually ended up gettin' the motor for $450 with the full stock exhaust system for free. now im just finishin' up my '89 SE 5-speed so that i can start pullin' my motor out as well and send it to the body shop. its gonna be one hell of a job and this will be my first time pullin' an engine
