Open trunk lid. Remove power antenna-to-body mounting nut. Remove or push aside paneling. Disconnect the antenna lead and the electrical connector from the power antenna assembly. Remove antenna mounting nuts/bolts and remove antenna from vehicle.

Yup, that is the silver ring. Try using some needle nose pliers to remove the ring. Stick the pliers into the slots in the silver ring and turn.

so it doesn't retract....do you hear noise from the antena motor when you turn on/off the radio?

if your power antena runs but the mast does not go down....you might be able to push the mast down manualy. slowly and carefully though.

Chances are, the plastic gear itself broke and is down inside the motor housing. I replaced my antenna about a year ago. I thought I got all of the old plastic gear removed from the motor but there was still a few incnhes of it left in the housing. I was too lazy to tear out the motor (it's a VERY confined space..especially for my big hands..lol) and just lived with the antenna retracting NEARLY all the way.
