Easy window tint removal

I know I've seen posts on this before, and I've seen others in the same boat as I was with nasty, old, bubbling tint in the back window. I decided to remove mine today. I went to Sears and bought a Shark steamer. I let it get charged up and started in one corner. If you start with the steam at one edge, you can watch it go under the film and separate it from the glue. If you are just a little patient, you can go down along one edge and get an entire sheet of tint loose,(mine was put on in about 5 separate strips) and then steam along the edge as you lightly pull. It will come of in one piece if you're lucky. Be a little careful with the rear window defroster. Keep razor blades and sharp stuff away from it.

After you get all the tint removed, you can use a spray bottle with straight ammonia (I used clear) and some #0000 fine steel wool to remove the glue. The old glue will be white and in the shape of the bubbles that were in the film. You can easily rub it off and then wipe the glass clean with paper towels.

Total time was about 3 hours. It sure made a world of difference in my car, now I can at least see out the rear-view mirror!

how much does a professional tint job cost? I was thinking about doing tinting my rear glass and doors this summer.

the Shark was on sale for $70. My side windows aren't too bad yet, but I may remove the tint on them and redo it sometime this summer, so I'll have it to use for that and other projects.

A professional tint job will run about $175+ here anyway.

i got my professional tint with lifetime warranty for 125 after everything. I got 5% rear and 25% front and the banner across the windshield. I had no tint on my windows, so if there's removal involved, add about 50 bucks.

not sure if it's depends on the type of tint/adhesive used but i just scratched up my tint with a blade and sprayed it with windex w/ammonia D (i believe any cleaner w/ammonia D will yield the same results) and peeled and scratched away. it's kinda like taking off wallpaper and almost as much fun

ones i tried removing the tint off my sister's car that was really crappily applied. I worked on it for about 3-4 hours and didn't even really make progress. I think the steaming might be the best idea yet. thanks

steam is the best way to go, my buddy owns a shop and thats what they use everyday. Makes short work of tint, and time is money.
