recommedations on tint?

what kind of tint should I put on my 3rd gen.
I went to a shop, they told me I should put 20% on the rear window and 35% on
the other windows. Their way is legal and I would get a sales receipt with the install.
does that make sense to any one?
I want to put 20% on the 4 windows and 35% on the rear window.
oh yeah..I live in new york if that makes a difference.

What is "legal" various from state to state. In CA, you are not suppose to put any tint on the front windows, but as long as you are not putting 5% or 20% on them, nobody is going to bother you.
Check your local laws.

Put two layers of 5%... jk

I have 5% and it's illegal but, I haven't had any trouble with cops yet. I've NEVER heard of anyone else getting in trouble for dark tint either.

I did, that happen within two weeks i paid $150 to had the windows tinted. Glad that it wasn't a "fix-it" ticket, just a $50 fine.

you CAN NOT tint your windshield below 6" from the top.
all the other windows are subject to local laws, but in general you aren't allowed to heavily tint the driver and passenger front windows, in some states not at all.

when you look through a car from the sides you pretty much look through 2 tinted windows at the same time. compared to looking at the car from the rear you only look through 1 tinted window. that's the reason why most tinters would tell u to put 20 in the back and 30 on the rest of the windows. also i don't think 30% is legal.

that doesn't make any sense to me...why would you want darker tint on your 4 windows? if anything, wouldn't you want your rear window to be darkest? i did my rear 3 windows in 20% smoke and the front 2 in 35%. it's not legal to tint the front windows where i live, but i haven't had any problems. in most states, you can have your rear windshield as dark as you want. i also did my front windshield to the 6" mark...but it doesn't seem to block enough sun. i guess it just depends how you sit in your seat, but i think 7" would've been better (the installers actually did 7-7.5" but i made them cut it because i knew it was illegal).

but i say tint your rear 3 windows with the same percentage. it looks better imho.

The law in NY is 35% They can pull you over for darker and fine you like $50 a day until you prove it's off. That's the fix it ticket. I know someone who was recently pulled over for it (20%) and got a fix it ticket. Luckily he knew someone and was able to get out of it. My brother has 20% on his Acura RL for a month now and luckily has not had any trouble....yet. Cops on LI (and BK for that matter) love to ticket people for anyting they can get their grubby lil hand on!

bah!
i've got 20% all around and it's perfect. a tad hard to see out the back when reversing sometimes but overall i'm happy. dark enough and no hassles from the cops in 3 years. of course as everyone else has said, it does matter where you live because tint laws differ from state to state, province to province (for me).

The only reason i put 35% on was because in PA we have inspection every year, and besides that if a cop pulls you over and they find that your tint is less than 35% with thier little meter they will take a razor to each window then give you a ticket to have it off in 10 days. But i do have 20% in the back, which they rarely check. But having the 20% in the back makes it look a little darker. If you have yearly inspection or cops like to bother people where you live, just keep it legal and save yourself some headache and money.

In most states it’s illegal to have tint on the front portion of the car. But you can put tint on the back windows.

State Laws for Window Tinting

State laws differ. Check your state law here:

Whats the standard unit of measure again?
35% of the light is blocked

or

35% of the light is let through?

I dont remember I do remember trying to switch the rear view mirror out of night mode on that Cobra I test drove, the tint was dark on that, annoying as hell.

Sean they probably dont bug you because you live in NM, with all the sun/heat and crap
