thinking about stripping/selling the max :(

after 3 years of almost 100% problems, i think i've got everything sorted out and only small issues to work on.
yesterday i turned my heat on and smelled coolant. its strong...real strong.
yup, the heater core is dead. i'm at work now and when it cools off enough i'm going to bypass it for the time being.
i am getting so sick of this car's problems. its almost completely modded, i ordered matt's lower tie bar last week, which was the only suspension piece i was missing. either today or tomorrow i'm picking up a 95 infiniti G20 for $700, and in 2-3 weeks i'm picking up a 91 G20 with a blown motor (modded with better interior) for $350, just as a beater as i'm starting a new job on monday that requires a 35 mile commute, each way, 6 days a week. i'm having thoughts of stripping the max totally, selling what i can and junking the rest. i do want a newer car but i always had the intention of keeping the max.
the heater core just adds insult to injury, and i cannot go without heat as i live in the northeast (for the summer i can but...) but i cannot justify paying someone to do it, but will not have the time to do it myself.
what am i to do!?

Some people have good luck with the VEs, others don't. My VG engine has been doing well after a few sensors and injectors needed replacing. I put in alot of time at the junkyard pulling parts for my interior restoration and clutch replacement project as well.

G20s are nice. Sure beats a civic any day of the week for a 4 banger sedan. 35 miles each way is brutal though. My commute is 22 miles each way in the backroads and I spend about 3/4 of a tank of fuel a week. Do whatever you feel is right though.

Is it still turbo'd? Having a turbo Max demands constant attention which is why I'll probly never attempt to turbo mine, even though I'd love the extra powah.

P.S. If you part it out I am local

Seems like you have already decided to get rid of it. I think attempting to sell the car 'as is' may be the best option right now. If you part it out, it may take a long time to do so. Then you have to take everything apart and wait for people to pay you. With that kind of time and effort, you could have replaced the heater core several times. Whatever you do, good luck. You're going to miss that max.

i've rebuilt the motor and gone through several transmission headaches. it runs excellent minus 1 issue (AACV when radiator fans come on). i put down 195hp and 190ftlb (corrected) in november and have since added a warpspeed complete exhaust (catless), needless to say it puts a smile on my face whenever i lay on the throttle.
there are just so many stupid problems i do not want to do with...i'm so torn right now.

as for the G20, i had not planned on getting another car anytime soon, i was going to save up a few thousand and buy a much newer car (looking at 2nd gen LS400s and 40 valve A8 quattros) but the price is right and its disgustingly reliable...i drove it yesterday, and its godawful slow in stock form but i've got a few tricks up my sleeve for it (free mods are my favorite!). should be a fun little car for the time being.

mine was never turboed :happysad:
i planned to, but decided i needed more reliability than it could offer at this point.
if i do keep it, i will complete the suspension (other than installing matt's tie bar, finish up the SFCs, wheel bearing and alignment its done.), see what else i can stiffen up while the dash is out for the heater core and eventually boost it.
i just wish i had someplace to store it for a few months. my driveway doesnt cut it, especially with the horrendous condition of the body, not to mention my parents are less than impressed that i've still got tons of parts and tools laying around.

the issue with selling it as-is, the retail value is $722, trade in is zero, private party is zero.
i could sell a spark plug for more than the car is worth! i realize that all the money i've put into it can never be recouped but i'd get more satisfaction from driving it off a dock into the ocean than selling it for that little.
with all the parts i've got, i dont think $5000 is unreasonable if i part it out.

PM me with a price, shipped..nothing new here
also, any way for you to cancel my most recent bill from paypal? my current situation with them has left a terrible taste in my mouth and i'm cancelling my account as soon as they get back to me.
i'll just send you a check, or we can work it out later on when i'm on AIM.

sidenote: anyone know what size the heatercore hoses are? my car is still spewing coolant when i pull the radiator cap off and i want to make sure i get the right size piece of bypass the core before i leave here.

i've been giving it love for 3 years now and its so close but so far.
maybe if i can find someplace to store it for the winter, i'll turn it into the sleeper project i've always dreamed about (100% modded suspension...almost there...400-ish wheel HP, ridiculous brakes (i'm a caliper bracket and a set of rotors away) and full, quiet interior with a nice stereo..and a nice paint job)

Part listing.... Of course there's not much I could use off a black car...

Sorry to hear man. Yeah... I'd think parting out might be about the only way to recoup some money.

1. tell them you'll give them $170 for it. i'd have to charge a bit more to cover shipping
2.
3. that would be the ID of the hose

Well me personally, I would keep the Max if I had a choice or chance to. Especially if I had plans on turboing it. Also if your having trouble putting up with little stuff now, then an Audi wouldnt really be the way you should go cause Im really into VW/Audi and Ill be the first te say that they are a PITA. My Corrado used to nickel and dime the hell out of me and my friends A4 does the same to him.
As for the G20.....if you got rid of the Max then the G20 would definitely be the direction to look in cause of the haul you have for work everyday. Plus, the G20 is a hot car IMHO...and a G20 with an SR20 is even hotter...

But if you do decide to part the Max, Im looking for a few things that you might be able to help me out with..........................

the G20 is not a replacement for the max, its so i dont have to drive the max every day. mostly because of the suspension that i dont want to drive it every day to work. also the G will get MUCH better gas mileage, plus i find it amusing that my beater is going to be faster than several cars on the road, and more modded than most G20s around here. my last beater was an 87 saab 9000 turbo 5speed. a guy i know tinkers with saabs quite a bit, i gave it to him for a few hours and it came back to me running 24-28psi on an otherwise stock car...lets just say i embarrassed 2 9-5 aeros and several other unsuspecting newer cars.
unless i can sell the G for what i'm asking ($2300) then i'll eventually turbo it..haha

G20
easy turbo car, SR20DE stock, so "easy" swap to SR20DET
lots of nice mods readily available for it, good gas mileage too, sounds like a winner

for starters i'm picking up a 91 G20 auto for $350. its got a greddy cat back (no longer availible), stillen intake (or stillen looking intake..whatever), HKS springs with AGXs (speaking of AGXs remind me to talk to you later about them ), light gray leather interior, brand new headlights, brand new plug wires, the rims/tires are in excellent shape, but its got a slipping transmission and supposedly the motor sounds like a rock tumbler.

edit: its also a high port motor, so swapping intake cams yields ~4hp across the board and ~9 peak.

do you smell antifreeze constantly or every now and then? I smell it in mine periodically

Im in the same boat, although my insult to injury was the minor accident i had

Maybe give a thought to keeping it as a leisurely project and use the G20 as a daily

i only smell it when air is coming through the vents
i just bypassed the heater core, is it normal to have next to no coolant come out of it when the hoses are disconnected?
i am definitely keeping the G20 as a daily driver, at least until i can sell it for a massive profit (like i said, buying it for $700, asking $2300). if i cant sell it for what i want, then its not a big deal to me. i can hold out for the right sucker..i mean buyer.
since i've bypassed the heater core, i can drive the car for a long distance now, i'm going home tonight and fixing my sway bar endlinks (another saga for another day) and going for a drive. i'll see how i feel about it afterwards..

Just keep it, it isn't worth the hassle of parting it out as I'm learning right now.

besides, your car is almost exactly like mine, there are only a few things left to replace Once you get through that it's just tires and pads for a while .

You should make sure to post a 'WTB' in the parts section as soon as you up your post count. May have more reads there.
