I had that problem I replaced the spark plug wires, distribution cap, and got a intake system cleaning. It could be a lot of problems though luckily I didn't have to replace my O2 sensor.

Air leak can also cause this; rubber hoses play intermittents nicely.
...the honda on this forum sounds dAngerOus.
a cold air intake from a 93 honda accord will fit a maxima as a short air cai however it is .5 inches smaller in curcumfrence then the stock one but it does not make a noticible diference.. also you have to modify some hoses in what ever fasion you choose

edit:
This sausage has two ends:
- choked, longer intake, better torq, (feels like more 'pwr' at low rpm)
- opened intake, more pwr at upper rpm, less torq

My advice would be to search for a vacuum leak. Use a cheap carb cleaner and spray around the vacuum lines and especially that intake that is too small for the Maxima (Because it's from a dirty Honda) If the engine idle changes up or down, there is a vacuum leak that needs to be repaired
