Hello all! I have been lurking around, just not posting anything because I still haven't gotten my car yet. Anyway, I borrowed it from my buddy a couple of days ago to check it out and test drive it. Again, it is a 91 SE 5 speed with 115K on it. The car is beautiful, but as with any 10 year old car it has a few quirks. First of all, there is an exhaust leak just below the exhaust manifolds (I assume it is a rusted y-pipe with a hole in it.) that needs to be fixed. Hell, the whole factory exhaust is starting to rust, so I may as well get a new ceramic y-pipe and a Greddy Cat-back. How does a greddy sound with a VG30E??? Is there a cheaper custom alternative to a greddy?
The other major quirk is that the factory chromed SE wheels are loosing their clear coat and corroding, making them look like S#@T. Is there anywhere that I can send them to have them refinished, or would I be better off finding a set that are in good shape?

Thanks, and best regards!

Ben

mine wheels are doing that also. i think that to get them refinished it would be around $500. maybe a little lower, maybe a little higher. you might just be able to get some in good shape for cheaper.

If you have the money I would go out and buy some new rims and tires. You can get some nice 17's for under a thousand. Its a little more than stock rims but they will give you a nice look and a lot better handling. Makes since to me instead of buying wheels you will want to get rid of in the future. I know a couple of sites with cheap wheels if you are interested.

92GXE, touring wing, 18” racing wheels, Port&Polished intake, custom intake, custom yellow interior, racing seats, back seats taken out and replaced with subs and amps, NOS kit, Suspension tech. Lowering springs, custom grille, soon to be custom painted and have the whole engine rebuilt for big shot NOS and custom SC and tranny converted to 5-speed.

Exhaust leak alternative

I am not sure exactly how much money you want to spend right after purchasing your "new" '91 Maxima. I also have a '91SE. It had the notorious leaking exhaust manifolds (broken studs), and leaking Y-pipe. No way around the broken manifold studs, had to have them drilled out and replaced. Now the Y-pipe...my mechanic removed it and had it welded. It's held for 4 years now. I can't bring myself to spend $400 for that damn "aftermarket" Y-pipe! I think he charged me $90 to remove it, have it welded, and reinstall it. Just a thought....

On the wheels... There is a catalogue put out by a company called "Eastwood". They sell an aluminum wheel refinishing kit that contains all the chemicals, and buffing wheels, and clearcoat paint that you need to refinish your wheels. I do believe that one kit will do 4 wheels. The kit is around $100.

As with any "used car" I purchase, I believe in waiting a while before I dump a bunch of money into it. You just never know what is going to come up. I'd hate to see you spending $1000 on some wheels, and then find out you need a new clutch....

The Y-Pipe will rust, mine did and i just had it welded for now. As far as the rest of the exhaust you don't have to worry about it, it's all 2" Stainless Steel Piping running from the Y-Pipe to the Muffler, the outside coating on it will rust but it won't get any holes for alooooong time. When the mechanic had my car up welding the Y-Pipe we looked at the piping cause i was thinking about having new pipe put in but it's all fine. Nothin to worry about
