Are The E36 Lights Easy To Install

Internetautomart has a pair of E36 Hella for $150, Will those just pop in place of the stock ones? Also will the wires be able to be hooked up or do they need some moding?

I think I speak on behalf of almost all the Org. memebers by saying that it is definetely not a direct swap. Lots of cutting and grinding is necessary. I'm getting ready to do it myself; but I'm waiting for an SoCal org. member to help me out. I should have some help sometime next year.

it is fairly easy just really time consuming. There really isnt a right or wrong way since it is custom... it will sit alittle behind the grill but it still looks good...if you need any details let me know.

You will have to buy new wiring harnesses that will be able to use the two bulb lights instead of the one bulb high/regular beam set. As for making the lights fit they wont just "drop" into place, you will have to do your fair share of cutting and munipulating to make them work, but its not a project that you cant do. I didnt think it was too hard to make them fit, you just have to take your time and see where the light hits the bracket and just figure out the best way to make everything fit. Good luck.

The only problem I have had is aiming the dang things, sort of hard to do when they are not in the car. So what I came up with ( while wandering down the fastner asile at HD ) is this.... ( all measurements are rough, dont quote once you get in there youll see what you need ) Take a 2x6in piece of sheet metal bend and drill so it connects to stock mounting point on the lights. Take 1 dremel and a few cutting disks and cut a channel down the middle of the sheet from, oh let's say 4-5 inches ( again rough ). Purchase 4 fender washers, 2 bolts, and 2 wing nuts. Drill a hole along the center line of the E36 stock fastners on the mounting bracket. See where I'm going here??? Fasten sheet piece to lights, put washer on bolt, insert bolt through sheet bracket and light bracket, add washer. Then aim lights, (yep if you fix the top first then you can use this sliding bracket to raise and lower the bottom of the lights to aim) tighten wing nut when they point where you want.

Ohhh and tools you WILL need, even if you don't use the sliding bracket idea.

a 3-5 lb sledge ( yes a small handled one )
a dremel and a half dozen cutting disks
or
a grinder, I perfer the control of the dremel
Plenty of brat wash ( if your from my neck o the wood you know )
Everything else is obvious ,, eerrrrrrrr should be. Best o'luck!!

i used a pair of pliers, a hammer, and thats it. I used the pliers to rip the metal that was in my way because i was too lazy to go get a cutting disc for my dremel, and the hammer to make the bracket fit into the car.

If I can put cefiro's in with using my dremel for the first time then you can do it. I learned how to use a dremel and install something that doesn't fit all in one day.

If you can manage to fit 9004 bulbs into the lights then yes. Otherwise, no. It's not even close.
The point of BMW lights (for some people) is to use the better 9005 and 9006 bulbs, not the crappy 9004.

Please check out the websites on the headlight install for more info.

A dremel would be best found at Home Depot or Lowes, or a store that sells power tools. I know the autozone near me doesnt have any.

sears, homedepot, lowes, have most of the dremels. the wire harnesses are either 4 or 5 bucks each depending on what store you go to. autozone, rs strauss, pepboys and napa all have them. shouldnt cost you more than 22 bucks

I got mine off of eBay. 15 shipped yo!!!

I suggest getting atleast 50 heavy duty cutoff disks. I used almost 100 if not more on my cefiro conversion.

did you get an actual dremel brand rotary tool or a knock off? i bought a knock off at meijer for 10 bucks. broke 3 of them all within 2 weeks, took them back of course and got new ones.

when i was done with it i took it back once more....im bad, but it was junk. i recommend an actual dremel brand rotary tool.

A dremel with a WAND. The Wand makes for more precision and comfort.
