Couple of days ago my odometer/tripometer died out on me. Anyone know how hard it is to fix at home if at all possible or how much a shop would charge? Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated....

Here we go again..haha..
Yeah my opinion like always is to go to the junkyard and strip the whole g/cluster off a max. Saves tyme,$$$, and paying someone to fix it. Or get it fixed and also have a other set just in case...Good luck (stick with your SE gauges though.. )

if just your speedo says 0

Most likely the reason for this is the cable that connects it to the tranny, just rech under and find it and im sure you will find it dangleing, if you have trouble let me know, ive repaired about 13 of em before sometimes they get binded or caught and ive also had my friend who ownes an alarm install place need me to fix one they can become easily disconnected from the back of the cluster, just tear it out at the junk yard and put it in your jacket, tell em your looking for the factory alarm system of or the relay for the locks or something

cable?

The 3rd Gen (and up) Max doesn't come with a cable does it? All the ones I've seen is via a speed sensor. If its the sensor (usually you'll have a iratice speedo reading) thats gone its any easy fix, as for the cluster it could be a multitude of things from dry joints to goodness knows what.

As lcali1 said, go for a cluster set from the wreckers if you want to go the easy way.

no

There is a cable it connects to the back of the speedometer, just remove the lower dash covers and reach up, most of the time it just comes loose (7 out of 10 times)and has to be reconnected, if it is broken, you will have to remove it from the transaxle end via the "cable to transaxle hold down bolt. also if you have difficulty's you can remove the whole cluster and work on it that way. Dont forget to use "speedo lube" or graphite powder or you will be doing it again in the winter, also it is easyer when installing to start at the speedo end and work down

Your talking about your miliage not working huh? Seems like the motor went dead on the odo. Its completly separate from the gauges. I suggest checking the little wire coming out from the back of the odo into the computer panel behind the gauges. It seems weird for it to have come off if it did, but u neva know.If thats the case, problem solved. If not bring it to a certified nissan tech so that u dont tamper with the miliage of the car and in the future the odo reads accurate miliage.
As far as I know the max is equiped with a speedsensor. I believe BigJay meant to say the wire harness going into the computer panel behind the gauges. Its a huge wire that splits up into three smaller ones then into the panel. I have personnaly striped the whole front end dash in the past and only came across that huge wire and no cable. Well if u look at it, I guess u can call it a cable. WIRE CABLE... Thats what he means.

ahhhh

i see, sorry for the confusion, i have no experiance with that but i do know that this is a great opportunity to get some seriouse odometer fraud going on ESPECIALLY if your the first owner, use this repair to pay for itself you get me? the only records that have any validity is the registry record for exmple, when you but a car the registry records the mileage and when it is re registered after selling it if the mileage is lower than the previouse owners mileage they know you f*$@ed with it, but DO NOT let it be done the right way because they will tell the registry and you will have to sell the car as mileage unknown, which is nothing you want to hear when your buying a car, if you look at your title it has a special section for cars like yours so be carefull but get over on it, set it back to about 10k miles from what you bought it at so that way there you can have another 15k miles before you sell it and it will look like you only drove it 5 k all the time you had it foesheezy!!

My speedo is also at 0

I also have the same problem. I bought a 1990 Maxima. Its speedo is always at 0. Someone told me it is a easy fix. First, I wanted to fix it by myself. If anybody knows how to fix it, please share your knowledge.

suya

If your speedo is at 0 you can follow the instructions i put forward and they will fix your problem but i had gone off topic, his real problem was hs tripometer that indicates his cars mileage. If you have any probems let me know

Ohhhh ...

That makes sense. I thought BigJay meant the old type of speedo cable that would spin inside its housing (driven by the transmission) thus causing the speedo needle to turn. These always used to pop out at some time or rather.
