Nissan Factory Service Manual Sucks!

My 91 FSM does not show how to change the distributor cap and rotor.
I had to go buy a Chiltons to provide some light. But its information is also vague.
To change the cap and rotor, do I have to unsrew the two or screws I see there?
Once I replace these parts, do I have to set the timing?
I dont have a timing light.

well the FSM is for a lot of the nissan tech and etc..you wonder why they don't put in there how to change oil? the cap and distributor are very easy to change. simple tune up job. if you need a more simple manual then yes go for the chilton.

Actually Danny, in my FSM they DO show how to change the oil.

If your so unhappy with the manual, sell it someone on the board here. There are plenty of people who would love to take it off your hands. Ngthing for instance has been looking for one. As for it not showing how to replace the distributor cap and rotor, why would Nissan ever show consumers how easy a job like that is when they can not put it in the manual and force most people to go to the dealership to get it done. For the majority of the population, how to change the cap and rotor is not general informantion, and that is all the FSM was designed to provide.

Uhhh, cincy, you're a little backwards there...
the FSM was designed for Nissan Techs, NOT the general public. This is the book the mechanics use to diagnose and fix problems on your car when you take it to the shop.
As for the cap and rotor, there are 4 screws total that you have to remove in order to replace the whole thing.
there's 3 on the distrib cap, in a triangle shape.. remove those three, then the cap will pop off. there one on the side of the rotor.. it may be an allen head screw- I forget now. been a while. but remove that and slide the rotor off the shaft- REMEMBER which direction it was pointing!
Now just slide the new one back on and put it in the same position. when you tighten the screw, it'll go back to where it was.. there's a flat spot on the shaft, or the shaft may be keyed.. I forget which one now. but it'll go back on exactly where you pulled it off.
Now screw the cap back on. I think there's a rubber gasket on it too, so make sure you replace that when you're putting it back together, or the car will run like crap every time it rains or you run through a puddle.
once you tighten the 3 screws, just reconnect all your plug wires and fire that puppy up! make sure you get all the wires in the correct place- the cap and wires are all numbered, so only a doofus would screw it up- plus the wires are short enough, they should only go to one socket before runnign out of cable.
Now see how easy that was? now do you see why it wasn't in the FSM? In fact, it probably IS in the FSM, it's just hard to find. I could never find the stuff I needed in it.. by the time I gave the book to my GF and had her find it, I had already figured it out myself most of the time. oh well. there ya go.

Thank you Sir !
Thanks so much.
Would I have to set the timing after I replace the cap and rotor? I read that timing is adjusted via loosening the distributor hold-down bolt.
Is one of the three bolts that hold the cap in place the distributor hold-down (timing) bolt?
