leaking power steering fluid

About a month ago my 92 GXE started making a whirring noise, almost like something out of a Warner Bros. cartoon. Anyway, I thought it was the transmission, but when I opened up the hood while the car was running I noticed that the sound didn't seem to be coming from the transmission. I had also noticed the the pitch of the noise would change when I turned the steering wheel when driving. Anyway, I put some fluid in the power steering reservoir and the noise stopped. Then, about a week or so later it started again. I put more fluid in and it stopped. Since then I've had to fill it about three more times. I've figured that there must be a leak some where. Does anybody have any thoughts or suggestions on how to pinpoint and fix a leak of this type?

thanks in advance,

John

you'll find the leak by looking to see where the fluid comes from.
basically look where the wet changes to dry

If it's not a PS hose, it's probably the rack (check the rubber boots on it).

Check for a leak somewhere. After youre done driving, turn the engine off and look at the ground to see if there is anything dripping (and from where).

Last week my pressure hose had a crack in it. It didnt come out that much but as days went by it got worse and worse. After I would drive, you can see probably 1/4 quart drip out and the whole backside and bottom of the engine was covered in tranny fluid. I got the hose changed on Sunday and have been fine since.

DONT let it drip for too long, that fluid will eat the bushings on your lower control arm. Im getting mine fixed soon, but right now my suspension sounds like some kid banging on his drum set.

Best case is a bad hose. Worst case is a defective power steering pump. I replaced my pump

I had the same problem in my 93 GXE this last winter. The fluid was dripping from the left side and it turned out to be coming from the rack. I ended up replacing the entire rack which cost around 200. My father and I were able to remove the old one and install the new one without taking anything else out. It's tricky to work around everything but it's possible to do it within a few hours.

This past weekend I had to replace the PS pump on a 91 SE. There was no leak when the engine was running, but once I turned the engine off, the fluid just poured out of the pump fron seal. The leak started Friday night with no previous indication.
