power antenna
power antenna
I'm basically wanting to know how you would go about getting the power antenna out and replace it with a new one. I know you go through the trunk and take out that paneling. But, the only bolt I can see that you would take out, just releases the seat belt harness, and it doesn't do any good in getting the antenna out. Need help.
I'm sure there must be a thread or write up out there somewhere, if so can someone provide it or just tell me how. Thanks

Oh yea, basically it just stoped working for no obvious reason about 5 months ago. So if there is an easy test that any of you know of, I would gladly do that as well. Just to see if something else is the problem. The antenna is stuck in the down position. It wont do anything.
hi,
here is a site that tells how to replace the antenna,

okay I think I found the culprit, so what can I do about this aside from buy another one, heres the pic. This is the circuit board that the red harness connects into.
Okay, I can't figure out how to post a picture here, I guess maybe I need to be a donating member first, here is the link to myspace site where I put the pictures. http://spaces.msn.com/members/TheItalianStalion1/PersonalSpace.aspx?_c11_PhotoAlbum_spaHandler=TWlj cm9zb2Z0LlNwYWNlcy5XZWIuUGFydHMuUGhvdG9BbGJ1bS5FZG l0TW9kZUNvbnRyb2xsZXI%24&_c11_PhotoAlbum_albumid=c ns!1pp6tiHDeCFModoJeL0aLRNg!174&_c11_PhotoAlbum_sp aReturnToFull=0&_c11_PhotoAlbum_spaProcess=1&_c=Ph otoAlbum&_c02_owner=1

On the first pic there, towards the bottom left of the board there is a wire or circuit whatever you call it that is broken. So I know that would have to be resoldered. But, what could I use to clean this thing up? Or is this not salvagable. Or, perhaps do you have any suggestions on where to get a new one. Or if this is not cost effective, how about putting in an aftermarket non power antenna, how would you go about doing this and how hard is it? I've looked at a few places that sell the power antennas, none of them come with this box that has the circuit board I'm talking about. So just buying another kit won't help. I'm guessing the circuit board is car model specific. I think the previous owner had replaced it. Cause' on the plastic casing of the circuit board, there is masking tape that says 93' infinity q45, so I think they went to a junk yard and picked it up or something.
Thanks for any help.

hi,
i think there are two cause to your problem,
1.) the motor might be died,
2.) the power antenna thread could be broken so the motor can't push the power antenna up,
do you hear the motor running when you turn on the radio ?

Easiest thing to do...(IMO)
Go to a junkyard and get a new board that looks in shape. They won't charge you much and you'll save a lot of time. Unless you're into working on it
My antenna just sort of quit working too...it's been bent before hand though, so it never raised all the way anyhow. Right now I just have it fully extended all the time haha

I'm done screwing around with it. The dealership wants to charge some 73.46 or something like that for the fricken circuit board. What a bunch of a$$ wipes. I know I can get it cheaper at a junk yard, probably just a couple of bucks, but I don't really feel like screwing with it. So I just stuck it back together and left the antenna extended. Reception is great! But, unfortunatley the metal molding part that protrudes from the vehicle where the antenna sticks out, is not meshing back together properly. I can't screw it all back in right. So someone could easily just come up and rip it off. But, it stays put while i'm drivin' so I guess that's all that matters.
how much cheaper are junkyards then other places ... how much do you think they would charge for the 3 back trunklights , the 2 tails and the trunklight? i wanna replace the red/white with the black set
The Junk yards are much cheaper in most cases. But, keep in mind quality, especially when it comes to electronics.
I belive the circuit board controls the signals for the power antenna, relaying them from the radio telling it to go up or down. So if yours is like mine then that could be a problem. I don't know for sure, but I believe the aftermarket antennas, don't come with a bulky circuit board. On the one's I've seen, they are smaller little black boxes, that are connected directly to the power antenna, instead of being connected with a metal harness, like mine. They run about $30.00 not including shipping on e-bay for the whole kit. The mast, motor, ect. I don't really think it's that worth it for me right now, so I will let it be.

Oh, and a little tip if your gonna go Junk Yarding. Some of those guys will try to rip you off. Afterall, it is buisiness. It's not like going into a dealership where all the prices for everything are premarked. They will for the most part give a price, but from what I have found, or maybe this anomoly is only found in AZ, it is much higher than what they are "willing" to sell it for. At most junk yards, you can barter with them. Don't act as though you need the part as bad as you might. Try to look as though your just shopping around, but show that you are serious about spending money. Ultimatley remember, it is a junk yard. They may try to sell you some bull**** about how much this part costs new. Well, just throw it back in their face, not rudely of course, that the part they are selling you is NOT new. That usually helps I find in the process. I think I should take a trip on down to the local junk yard myself sometime soon, I need to fix up a few things on the Max. Good Luck.
you have a printed circuit board that has been sitting in water and the metal case corroded. you have to not only get another printed circuit board, you have to seal the case that contains the board so the same thing doesn't happen again.
Whats wierd is that my power attena got stuck when it was down by something jamming it but my radio/cd/tape deck still works. Would i have to replace the attenena, because i have a tranny busted 93 se as well, but im trying to fix that one and use the gxe as the parts car, but it will take a while. Or can any of you list a place that would sell a antenna that i wont have to pull out the power?
as long as the antenna is plugged in, the power antenna functioning or not (goes up and down or not) will not stop the head unit from working. The signal maybe a little weaker, but everything else should be functional. Also, a note for people who might be new to this, but our car have dual antenna. One is etched on the rear windshield, and the other one is the power antenna itself.
antenna ups and downs
My '89 SE has the same problem as myblue92maxima's. When the ignition's turned on or off (or the stereo), the power antenna tries to wind up and down but it stays about half-way. Good radio reception and I'd just leave it up, but it slips back down. I didn't want to replace the whole thing just because the cable unhooked from the spool. But I've heard you can get a whole new mast/motor/cable spool on eBay for $25. Are they really one size fits all? I just broke the five-cent clip at the top of the LR window regulator. Didn't want to spend $65 on a used assy., but that's what it took to repair it. Soldering antenna circuit boards on 16 yr.-old cars? Just replace it.
I called nissan a couple of days ago, and asked them how much for the circuit board for the antenna, they quoted me some $73.00 or so. That's bull****, I just pulled out the antenna enough so I can get good reception, It works fine.
I keep raising the dead! sorry!
Has anyone tried replacing their OEM/Power Antenna with those aftermarket short "universal" antennas? I don't know if they have an official name to them, but they're about 1.5' to 2.5' long, encased in a black plastic, very flexible. Does anyone notice a decrease in reception using those antennas?

I got sick of fixing the power antenna so I went to metra and got a black manual antenna and used some of the mount stuff off the old power antenna and it looks like it was made for it. Some folks attach a wire from the antenna ground to the antenna for best reception. There are adaptors also for the Diversity antenna, but I just cut it off and soldered on a standard antenna plug.
