gauge cluster swap (GXE vs. SE)

I need to swap out my gauge cluster on my '92 GXE and I have the chance to buy a cluster from a '92 SE.....will the SE cluster work in my GXE?

Thanks.

Can someone put pics up of their VE cluster? I've seen some that are 125 and 145 and I know it's because of the engine but I noticed at the junkyard the needles were clear as opposed to the orange GXE ones. Is that normal or is that aftermarket needles.

Its too easy to tune the odometer with reading u want... Most common sport here is toothpick odo contests.

so basically you use a toothpick and push what mileage you want to read, cant someone just say like 30,000 miles??? well it can be done with a toothpick??? i want a VE cluster and i want it to read my correct mileage.

The cluster are electronically controlled, so even if you swap in a VE cluster, it will still read the corret mph, so go ahead and swap away.

edit: oops, misunderstood your post, yes, you can set your mileage, quite easy actually, but tedious never the less, not to mention it's illegal. Just take the cluster out and you can figure it out from there, trust me, it's real easy.

WARNING: Don't try the toothpick idea, it will break the plastic gear driving the odometer, and you will end up breaking the odometer. The toothpick only works on some model of cars, i.e. Honda Del Sol (don't ask me how I know)

While still wet behind ears, I was working for a year for a instrument lab. Daily job, speedos, rpm's, pressures unameit: everythin was repaired back then... Have not opened this max gauge though but justabout anythin else. These kinda instruments were done 80 years ago, so I just suppose it is sooo. Anyways can be made very easilly: just wedge the number rolls separate enough, rotate...

With proper tools everythin is possible; and humans have installed it. Typically u have to drill some rivets... I suppose easier to rotate numbers than swap. As said, I have had no need to open max gauge.

Smbdy who has been there, pls give us some macro pics...

I can't provide pics, but you can swap it out via 2 screws, and unplugging a harness. The odometer it self is not mechanically tied into the gauge cluster.

Remove the 2 screws in the bottom right and unplug it form the back of the spedo and it will fall right out. No toothpicks are required

Thks for the pic. I guess however, that the question was to separate odometer from the speedo gauge. Droppin the gauges off do not need any explanation, as stated earlier, two screwss in justabout any car.

So if some macro pics from the actual gauge is found.... (I am not gonna strip worKing max for a pic, as he ho does all the work here).

Some cameras have macro features: anyways u can get detailed screen filling pic of mosquito smile... The big assy pic is no hlp in the odo q.

I assume u have bad contact between the screwss and the printed circuit in u pic. Or maybe some cut in wirings, see that web page I gave above.
