new alternator whines, why??

Ok, so i had to replace my alt, well the first one was bad, so i had to drive 60 miles to another autozone to get the damn part, well this one has a capacitor on it, the first one didn't, well i put it on, and there is a slight whining noise. Since i've put it on its gotten a lot louder . What is causing this and how can i fix it???

- Alt? Open and replace bearings
- Belt? replace, tighten maybe loosen
- when u take it back, please ask if they do sell the rectifiers only, then tell me how it was

If it is whining it is most likely the bearings....TAKE IT BACK...

If you get another one be sure not to tighten the belt too much.

...just kidding. After belt adj, return it: it seems to have old bearings. (The reman mechs ? seem to have a global hatred for work.) I'd rather repair mine.

good luck getting your money back.

I had to fight with them to get the money back from mine, but they didn't refund the core charge.
they only gave me a merchandise credit though

true, the first replacement alt caused me to have to be jumped every 1/2 a mile, for 15 miles, charge for 5 minutes, jump off, drive as far as i could till it'd die, repeat..........what sucked is it was in the middle of a terrible storm, lightning everywhere, scary....

whats up with the rated threads all the sudden??

Napa offers one with a lifetime warranty. takes some $$$$ though. But it's well worth it. The 3 yr warranty ones are just remans. So spend the extra dough. And put that receipt in a safe or something.
