I suggest you go the fluids and lubricants forum for this info....

any oil that's rated "SJ" or higher will do fine.
if you don't see an API starburst symbol on it, put the bottle down slowly and run away from it and the store as quickly as possible!

Our cars generally show strong compression well past 100k miles. I changed my first engine over to synthetic (Mobil 1) with no problems at 148k and it got better mpg. It already had a minor leak on the bottom of the rear main seal, but it didn't get worse when I swapped oil. The engine was strong, but the VTCs were clacking pretty much full time when I bought the car.
In my JDM engine Jeff put in Castrol GTX and when I brought it home, I switched it to Mobil 1. I have no problems whatsoever, as far as oil getting by the rings or leaks out of the front or rear seal. I also get 30 mpg on the freeway (when I keep it under 80).
I guess if your car was already losing compression, synthetic might be a bad idea, but in my own experience (owning 8 Nissans) I have switched all but one over to Mobil 1 with no ill effects. The one that I didn't switch was a 72 Datsun 510 with over 200k that I had as my first car. I didn't even know anything about synthetic oil and I paid $200 for the car.

Go with synthetic oil-I recommend Mobile 1. Amsoil is a little better but harder to get and more expensive. You can get a 5 quarts bottle of Mobile 1 for $20 at Walmart. Also, remember that there is no such thing as synth being "thinner" then mineral. There is weight on the bottle and this is what you should observe. The first number shows the "ability" of the oil to "flow" at low temps and the second number shows viscosity at 100C. For our cars 5w30 seems to be a pretty good option. This is the only thing I put in my car(the 89 SE) and I can't be happier-169k, excellent compression, ZERO oil consumption every 5000 miles.
P.S.
I switched from mineral to Mobile 1 @ 139k when I got the car and never had any leaks. All I am saying is that you will not hurt your engine by putting a superior oil in it.

I bought the car with 112k miles and I've always used mobile 1 full synthetic (change it every 2-3k with whatever kind of oil filter). Now I have 139k miles with no leaks, almost no vtc clacking, and no smoke.
true, 5-30 is 5-30 weight. Mobile1 is not thinner, it just doesnt have the impurities that dino oil has, or not as much. It is the impurities in dno oil that cause seals to swell some. Synthetic is more pure and does not cuase the same swelling of seals therfore sometimes seals "leak". It just depends, I have hopefully around 60,000 on this used low mileage motor and have run nothing in it but mobile 1 since I got it about 10,000 miles ago. no leaks, passed smog with plenty of room to spare.

Hey guys my car has 222,754 miles on it and I was going to clean it with three cycles of Auto-RX and then Sea-Foam.
After this I want to swith over to mobile 1
Do you think My CAR can handle it Do you think I will have bad side effects!
The Car does not leak oil at all And is still very strong running !!
Thanks for your replys

Either way the Mobile 1 line (which is the one with a number 1 on the bottle) is full synthetic.
IIRC
I've used QS Higher Mileage on this car and my previous car. I love it and always use it. Why does QS suck Jeff. Also I used to always put a quart of Marvel Mystery oil in my old car but I have read that adding additives is not that great of an idea so I dont do that with this car. I am considering going back to that. Also now I dont do my own changes because Im lazy and you cant beat Wlamarts $20 change, considering they use all the same stuff I would (QS higher mileage and Fram filter), plus I dont get dirty and have to worry about which sewer Im gonna dump the oil down!
