Oil Leak that Opec would hate!

Hey guys..been a while since I posted but I noticed that my litle oil leak has become a huge one! It is leaking out from the passenger side towards the front. I am sure this is a common leak so any hints or shortcuts would be appreciated.

sounds like a front crank seal. Check stickies.

BTW opec loves you for leaking oil. Keep doing it if you want them to like you. But then demand and prices go up, and precious resources are wasted....

true I do.
but if it's only the seal he needs, he'd be better off at the dealer after shipping.
if it's part of a more major job (I.E. Timing belt) then get it from me.

Seal takes about an hour for the VE, but for the VG it's way more complex. You have to remove the timing belt covers (and all the little components to get those off), The timing belt itself (to get the sprocket off), and then access the seal. VE, its right there behind crank pulley and takes no time at all. Another reason why VE is king of the 3rd gens.

Make sure its the main seal, oil should be dripping from behind timing belt cover around the area of the crank pulley. If so...sounds like wiking is right, you should probably change the timing belt as well. You will have the thing off already and besides, leaky oil in the timing belt area has surely gotten on the belt. I think oil eats away at those belts.

VG has less to repair: in that respect (more to repair) VE appearance to a repairshop, makes the shopowner hop (from joy). You as the VE paymaster, will be served as a king...

What u havent got, cannot break. If VG 5year tuneup is made as recommended, never there is a need to repair that seal.

Btw. Depending on miles, I'd also now swap the cheap VG waterpump, so no need for a revisit there during next 5yrs... No need to repair VTC, this time. But if tuneup is a worry, 2cyl 2-stroke Traband is the winner. Beetle comes abreast with its 45sec engine swap world record...

the VG actually has more parts that involve more labor to replace than the VE IMO

Thats the same thinking I did. Now my pulley sits in the workshop waiting to be unleashed upon another VE.

An hour's work?

Last May I replaced leaking camshaft seals, because it would damage the belt, and the dealer told me the main seal repair would cost $1,000 because of all the stuff that had to be removed.

I've just been pouring the oil in, and felt like a rolling biohazard. <g>

What book would give the procedure?

Regards - Miles Thompson

Check Favorite links at left side http://www.cardomain.com/ride/748507/1

internetautomar : the VG actually has more parts
- Once in a lifetime, give the exact numbers... Belts/chains, valves, coilpacks, VTC's whatever.

VE $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$
VG $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

we're refering to the front crank seal, not the rear main which IS a major job

Wiking- my VE has needed injectors (VG would too) window regulators (VG would too) Exhaust (VG would too) and I haven't needed to replace a cap (no gots) Rotor (no gots) or wires (no gots those either) timing belt (not one of those either) My VTCs work fine too.
so a VG is a more expensive maintenance vehicle than a VE more parts that need to be replaced on a REGULAR basis.

Pls do not start poems again... VE/VG classification falls strictly on engine. VG/VE full repair in the end, maybe ? 300k; Stricly exact facts...can u ever? Belts/chains, valves, coilpacks, VTC's whatever:

VE $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$
VG $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

END of issue.

1. the chains should NEVER need to be replaced in theory.
2. VTC failure only occurs on a small fraction of the total VEs produced.
3. Coil packs go bad rarely, it's not a normal maintenance item. mine are still original and they are the oldest ones here.
