pulling the tranny today
pulling the tranny today
i've never done this before on any car. i've got my ****lon's manual but we all know there's things the manuals don't touch on. is there anything that i'm going to have to watch out for or any ways to make this an easy job? not that it's super difficult to undo some bolts and lower it out but i might as well see if anyone has any pointers.
thanks
thanks
The Chilton's manual is worthless. I found everything I needed here on the 'org. Here is the thread where I replaced my transmission earlier this Summer:

Best of luck, plan on several days to do the job, have a breaker bar or air wrench handy, and find some patience.

I just did this on my VE. I am not responsible if you drop the tranny on your head.
This list may not be all inclusive. In other words, I may have accidentally left something out. Use some common sense when doing this job. Steps I used:
- Support car with jack stands on all four corners. You can use just the front. Make sure have at least 17 inches of clearance or you will not be able to slide the tranny out from under the car.
- Disconnect and remove battery
- Remove LTB (if you have one), front sway bar, and y-pipe
- Disconnect shift rods from the tranny
- Remove both axles
- Remove starter
- Remove battery tray, and intake.
- Support tranny with a floor jack, tranny jack... I used a full size floor jack (3 ton) with a 5" (IIRC) saddle.
- Remove the tranny to engine bolts
- Remove mounts
- Remove tranny
The transmission is pretty heavy. I didn't use a helper to pull it but I don't recommend this as I almost dropped it. If you don't have enough experience to fill in the details on some these items (remove starter, remove axles...) this job *might* be over your head. Just don't bite off more than you can chew. It would suck to break something else in the process, hurt yourself, have to get the car towed.... I will update this list as I think of more .

thanks a lot for all the tips. unfortunately i don't think i'm going to be starting today like i thought. i appriciate the replies, thank you. a wierd thing is, apart from the tranny barely working anymore, i am blowing the eng. cont. fuse when shoving the stick to the 1-2 side of the gate. if i leave it in neutral the engine will continue to run but as soon as i move the stick, the fuse will blow. this left me stranded the other night when the tranny was obviously on it's last leg. i'm guessing it's blowing the fuse to prevent me from doing more damage to the transmission. i could be completely wrong. also a guess that the position switch is faulty. does anyone have any clue about this? it would be a pain to replace the bearing and any other parts that were broken as a result, and then have continue to blow the fuses after reinstalling the transmission. thanks again.

Naw..I think you are rubbing against some wires either where the stick comes into the cabin or the linkage to the tranny itself...
I just did my 90 SE Auto -- didn't need to remove the Y-pipe nor the sway bar but it may be slightly differnent on the 5-spd.
The Y-pipe was a little hard to work around to remove the three 12mm bolts on the RH CV (axle), but it's not impossible. I found some "flexible" extensions for my socket set -- extensions that are kind of springs, but allow you to work around slight corners/angles without losing torque. There really isn't enough room in there to use a "universal joint" socket adaptor.
Patience, patience.

I highly recommend going out and buy a transmission jack! I can't believe how much easier it made my job. This thing is definitely worth it's weight in gold. I'm happy that Kaleb suggestion this to me before I dropped my tranny. I found that Harbor Freight has the best deal on one for about $60. I can literally R&R my tranny with one arm!
This is the exact one I bought from Harbor Freight...
