Tempature gauge rises while idling

Help,

Lately my temp gauge will rise to hot while idling, but as soon as I start moving again the temp gauge goes back to normal.
What can cause this, i tried to relieving any air that might be in the system , but it did not work.
please advise before I go to the mechanic.

Thank you in advance.

- fluid level, air bubbles out, thermostat jam
- tighten belt. DIY, raise the car and tighten; if the bolt has free play, belt is definitely loose. Check under, pass side:

how high does the temp guage go up....you might want to flush out your coolant system...youll see the tons of junk that comes out. also check one thing, does your radiator fans kick on when it gets hot???

edit: UUGGHHH wiking beat me...but wiking, what would the belt have to do with the temp?????? i mean if he doesnt hear the blt squeaking, then it shouldnt be sliping right?

Thank you for all the fantastic answers,
The temp gauge will rise close to the last line,
the a/c works cold for a while but after a bit it turns warm.
The fan works, it does come on.

The belts have been making noise for a while, I have used belt dressing , but only lasts a little bit.

When the engine starts getting hot i smell antifreeze inside the car.

SqueaKing vs. weaKing:
- story does not tell =no info any thin about possible noises. Thus his belts may be noisy or silent.
- loose belt slips, 100% certain, may be noisy or silent.
- veeery cheap/easy to check, right?

Btw. Pumps been known to become corroded.

Not to go off the subject...But the guage on my 90 Maxima does the same thing at idle or while driving "shooting to hot on the temp. guage", and ever time I would pull over and let my car cool down and whatnot.... one day I my car did this, I decided to flick the guage bezel it goes right back to in the middle where it is supposed to be. So I am guessing that by guage is just faulty, Would I be wrong to assume this?

Possible short circuit in the assy, reading here, seems to be common. If this is the case, unplugging the sensor (possibly) has no effect.

This is the exact same thing my car is doing right now, and just started. Mine's not the gauge as the engine is getting hoter than normal. Have you popped the hood after the gauge has gone way up to see if the engine bay and engine seemed hotter than normal, to rule out the guage?

Dude I love your CarDomain site. Don't ever take it down, I read it like the freeking FSM. Just wish you would do that coolant circulation stuff for a VE.

are you guys leaking any coolant?

Your water pump might be going out.

A lot of times water pumps start going and they don't move water nearly as well as they should. When this happens, your car will cool itself OK when you are driving (air on the radiator) but not very well when you are stopped/in traffic. Since 1) it's idling or near idle and 2) there is no air passing over the radiator.

My temp gauge starts to go up after a while of driving, but only after I did the TB bypass. Prior to that....nothing.

You might have a air pocket in your cooling system or something...I did this mini mod to mine over a year ago and have had no change in temperature reading since then.....

Most likely. The circ bypasses thermostat. If thermostat is sticky, blocking the circ could result in that, real bypass itself will not cause anythin: not help, not harm. I have blocked the circ, no help, no harm.

In faulty IACV -case, engine might jump high rpm - with bypass. Dangerous for blondies.
