Done Something DUMB, but I don't know!
I pulled out of the driveway in reverse, pulled off in drive, arrived at the stop sign and spilled some coffee in the console by the gear shift. Wiped it up, but when I pulled off, the car wouldn't change to 2nd gear (auto). I drove on and it finally slipped into 2nd gear, but wouldn't go to the higher gear, regardless of speed. If I kept the speed at 40 or less, it would pull in 2nd gear, but faster than that, the engine just races. Also, reverse no longer worked. I disconnected the electrical connections by the gear shift and dried them out, but no change. I had some slippage problems going to 2nd gear before the coffee spill.
I think the trans is shot. Any other ideas out there.
Thanks

I think you're both right..
trans is likely shot, but it's not because of the coffee spill.
unrelated, but simultaneous problems.

This happened to me once in a Ford Contour. The transmission acted like it died. (By the way, I didn't spill coffee all over the shifter). Anyways, after 1500 to get the transmission rebuilt it still slipped and would not go shift gears like it should. Turned out to be a $50 part that detected when the shifter is in gear and what gear it is in. That part is probably soaked in cream and sugar.

Try at least reading suggested links, lots easier than swappin aimlessly parts on a whim.
