whats the better buy?

1 alpine mrv 1005 2 channel
2 orion xtr 500 2 channel

i need one of these to run my pair W3s

i chose these two brands cause they are easily accesible (i.e. more than one vendor) and i can get a reasonable deal on one or the other.

any other good brands/models would be acceptable as a comparison.

(i need a 2 channel cause i have dual 4 ohm coils: unless you know any 4 channel amps that will take 2 or 8 ohms across 2 channels without blowing up.)

The orion is definitely a better amp. Theu are very underated too. If those are your choices go with the orion.

92GXE, touring wing, 18” racing wheels, Port&Polished intake, custom intake, custom yellow interior, racing seats, back seats taken out and replaced with subs and amps, NOS kit, Suspension tech. Lowering springs, custom grille, soon to be custom painted and have the whole engine rebuilt for big shot NOS and custom SC and tranny converted to 5-speed.

I would personally go with the orion as I've owned them in the past and loved them. Very high build quality. I beat mine to death for 2 years and it took every ounce of abuse.

the alpine is a pretty good amp also, but I've heard mixed reviews about the mrv amps. I have never installed or owned one, so I will neither bash nor praise this one.

If It were my choice, I'd definitely jump on the orion.

also consider looking at PPI amps. they will be probably about the same price as the Orion XTR amps, and they're also a very high quality job.

here is the rest of the story.
right now i have a sony 2252HX in the car. yes, i know it is not at the top of the food chain when it comes to amps.
it does an OK job, better than the previous set i had. lets say it was "STEAL" a VERY good one at that (dirt).

as for the 2 upgarade choices. the alpine 1005 is going for 400 and the orion 500 is going for 500. do you think these are fair prices.

also did you make the custom 6 inch mount for your front door speakers. if so how much would you charge to make me some or can you send me the blue print to make them.

amps and such

I have an MRV and it works out real well, but the Orion is more durable, better made, but less bang for the buck. Hifonics, and Rockford Fos also are good amps for a little less $$$. Two dual 4s is easy wiring run each speaker series, and run the two speaker parellel and you got a sweet 4 ohm load, bridge that **** and you got max power from your amp with maximum damping control.

A custom pod ain't that hard take 1/4 plywood and cut shape to cover the bose hole, make a donut out of 3/4 mdf, glue it to the plywood, sheit you can even use the four mounting holes from the blose. 5 1/4s will go easy, 6.5s just take a little more precision.

After this weekend, I will no longer need my front pods that I made for my 6.5" speakers.. I usually make and sell these for $60/set, but I'll sell you these for $35, shipped.. they're used of course, but in fine condition. you just gotta make sure your speaker fits. the ones that were in there were FOCAL 6.5" mids.

As amax said, there are also other amps out there that will give you moreo power for the money, but in that same aspect, you lose a little in quality.. Orion has always made an excellent product.. powerful, good looking, and bulletproof- both physically and electronically.
